Plasma Scaling Vs Amp Scaling
Hola!
Pretty much decided upon the Panny PHD8. My remaining questions is regarding scaling issues...
A question of which gives the best results (for a) analogue and b) digital).
1) PHD8 in built scaler
2) Denon 2807
3) Denon 4306
4) Yamaha 2600
It is really worth buying a really expensive amp for this feature (ok, ok and also for surriund proecessing heh heh). For example, I understand that the 4306 cannot scale 1080p. Alot of dough for a unit that isn't up to current market demands (, well with HD DVD / Blu Ray etc).
Comments?

Hi miceri,
I think you should consider adding a dedicated video processor into you list aswell if 1)budget permits and 2) you are looking to get the best pq from your panel.
Prices start from £SRP £825(Lumagen Vision DVI) to SRP £3699(Crystalio 2)

And of course there is a secondhand one in the classifieds on here, and a DVDO scaler can be bought for less than above.

Would love to add to a dedicated piece of Hw for this. However, convincing 'er indoors is another matter.... 'oh no, not ANOTHER box?'
Chances are good that I will in the future (when we get a better source into the house), but right now - Is it worth buying an expensive amp that claims to do good scaling compared to a cheaper one that is ok for 7.1 etc. And letting the telly do its business with the piccy?
Cheers all.

miceri - I would try the sources connected directly to the panel and see what you think. A lot of people use the conversion boxes, like JS Tech, to connect Sky/Freeview straight to the panel and are happy with the results.
As always it is down to the individual to judge if the pq is good enough for them. If you are considering a video processor in the near future then I would say hold fire on the expensive amp.

I bought a 2600 for exactly that reason and have found that the picture on my Pioneer 43XDE is MUCH better if I don't use the scaling on the Yamaha amp - under all circumstances - so I would be inclined to concentrate on the amp/receiver's sound quality only.
