Scaler, amp or dvd?

Hello. I have just bought a Toshiba 32WL66 LCD and i allready had a pioneer 585 DVD player, a Denon 2105 receiver and Canton speakers.
How can i get a 720p or 1080i on my LCD with tv programs and normal dvdīs? By getting a new amp, dvd or a scaler?
And by the way, whatīs the difference?

Hi Johnny,

You can buy an upscaling dvd player for your dvd or you can buy a receiver or video processor if you want to scale more than one input device.

A dedicated video processor will not only scale your input signal but also give you advanced de-interlacing algorithms, advanced colour control, gamma & greyscale control, help remove artefacts in the picture. The list goes on!

It really depends on your budget and your input/output devices and whether you watch more SD or HD material.

Hi Johnny,

At the lower end of your price range you have the older Iscan models

Over the £700 mark you have the Lumagen Vision DVI(SRP £825) and then the new Iscan VP30(approx £1300) and the Lumagen HDP(£SRP £1299) and Lumagen HDQ(SRP £1599)

You then move into the big bucks territory of the Crystalio 2!!!

The Lumagens are very good with SD & HD material. The VP30, with the addition ABT card, is meant to be fantastic with SD material but not as good as the Lumagen with HD(check out some of the other threads were some members have the VP30 for SD and then pass the HD signal onto the Lumagen)

Best bet would be to try and get a demo of the two so you can decide which one integrates best into your system.

Itīs a little out of my budget right now. What about a dvd player or receiver, will it do the job for now? And could they improve TV broadcasting?

The other option you have is a home theatre pc(HTPC). You could probably build a barebones one for around £500. If you don't fancy that then you can get the Oppo DVD or Snazio HD player for upscaling your DVDs.

You could also get an amp that has upscaling for all your input devices.
