Video Scaling with a PC?

Hi,

I intend to buy a LCD TV, an Amoi 37" 1080P to be exact, forgot the model name.

I did some research and found out that while this screen can output great pictures with a great source ( IE HD signal/DVD ), TV output is really poor, since in my country TV is still broadcasted in SD. Don't think HD is coming anytime soon but public trials are currently underway.

Some people in another forum I visited suggested video scalers to upscale the SD TV signal so that it won't look so bad on the high reso screen. But the price for a good one was too staggering (approx 1k USD).

Suddenly the idea of using a PC to scale video popped in my mind, so I figured that the community here might be able to tell me whether this is possible?

Thanks for any input

Yes it is, Dscaler is the popular software for this but you need good quality video capture hardware in the PC to make it worth while. Depending on your TV source (analogue, digital, cable, satellite or over the air) you'll want either a TV Tuner card or a Component/RGB capture card like the Sweetspot.

More details can be found in the PC/HTPC areas of this forum.
