Scalers that will upscale freeview - if any???

Hey,
complete novice here but would appreciate some help.

Is it possible to purchase an external scaler that has an upscaling feature that can be used to upscale Freeview to HD? {I am aware it probably won't be anywhere near true HD quality but you know what I mean} - just curious really. If so what models would anyone recommend and what is the cheapest that will do this job?
Also, I heave been informed by a friend that some AVRs will do a similar job... Is this so?
Just need pointing in the right direction really.
Have recently ordered a Samsung WS32Z409T and despite it's geometry problems etc. would like to make the most out of it's HD compatability without having to buy Sky HD or Telewest's TVDrive.

Thanks for your time

Leo HD, a suitable scaler might not be cost effective.
What inputs wil your TV accept - 1080i over component I guess? What about HDMI or 720p?
Your best solution might be a secondhand analogue-only DVDO or Lumagen.

regards,

Nick

Hello Leo_HD

As welwynnick points out the biggest obstacle you face will be budget - closely followed by trying to understand the user manual of any programmable Video Processors!!!

Some AV Receivers are now fitted with video format conversion and signal up-converters - these are generally not programmable and not that far ahead of what is fitted into many modern Displays; they are a convenience feature to enable you to have one cable going between your AV Receiver and your Display; no matter if you have ten or more different video sources attached to the Input side of the AV Receiver.

An entry level Video Processor that's going to make a meaningful difference to your Freeview (SCART RGB) signal will cost you upwards of 800.00 GBP if ought new - see:
