Re: Tutorial: What is anamorphic projection?

Yet another excellent clear and concise tutorial.

It's amazing how much easier it is to explain this sort of set up with the aid of a little film.

Well done once again to all concerned.

Re: Tutorial: What is anamorphic projection?

Very well explained - hopefully this will help cut out a certain amount of confusion about the term when trying to explain it in words. Steve's right, the aid of a visual demonstration is very beneficial.

Re: Tutorial: What is anamorphic projection?

Thanks for the comments, we have used youtubes new HD feature to upload the video in HD there. Just select the video from our youtube home and then click on watch in HD. Give the video about 10 seconds to buffer before playing. Feedback is welcomed.

Re: Tutorial: What is anamorphic projection?

A big thank you to Neil Davidson for the tutorial, very clear and simple to understand.
I had a look at how much an anamorphic lens costs and the cheapest was around $700, the most expensive around $2000. I didn't search or investigate too deeply. The cheaper costing one did not include a mounting method, the more expensive one might but to be honest I was put off and lost interest. The mounting bracket (that did not show how it fitted or worked) was $250 and on top of that I would have to buy a new screen and sell my 16:9.

Still, an honest thanks for the tutorial as I now understand what it is I don't have.

Re: Tutorial: What is anamorphic projection?

Excellent tutorial guys.

I would have and still might go down this route, I just wish the industry would sort out the subtitle issue, this is the only thing holding me back for going CIH.

Its so frustrating that a studios have over looked this issue as Im sure it would have been easy to implement, I mean at the cinemas any subtitles you see is on the are on top of the movie so why on Bluray and DVD they are in the black bars is beyond me!

I pray it gets sorted soon because I want a 2.35.1 screen in my living room!

Any way back to the point it was great demo and Im sure has clearer the impact watching a movie on a 2.35.1 screen makes.

There is a thread at AVS listing the DVDs and BDs with subs in the bottom black bars and burned on. Sadly its quite a few.

Nonetheless, there are plenty of people who never watch subtitled films, so fair play.

I have a 2.35:1 screen and a Panamorph UH380 lens. The only foreign (meaning no English dialogue) movies I've watched in the last couple of years were [REC] and Assembly. The first of these was 1.85:1 so the subs weren't and issue and the second although 2.35:1 bored me to tears, so much, that I can't remember where the subs were or how I watched it.

It is annoying when the odd line of subs in an English movie are in the black. You'd think with all the space on a Blu-ray disc they could offer two or three versions of subtitle options or make a player which can shift the subs up or down. It really can't be that hard...

So... are a few annoying subs enough to make me ditch 2.35:1 in favour of a 1.78:1 screen? No way!!! For 95% of what I watch it's not an issue.

All good points, well made.

For some it'll be more of a problem than for others.

Hopefully they'll sort it out so that it won't be a problem at all. You could certainly move the subs round on some HD DVDs.

Re: Tutorial: What is anamorphic projection?

I really want that lens set-up for my JVC. Thanks for the great demonstration, Neil and AVF. Next step is to go get a proper demo.

Re: Tutorial: What is anamorphic projection?

Nice tutorial ,

Subs will always be an issue though , its kind of like voice recognition software having to deal with regional accents.

With subs there are so many variations , Assembly had the subtitles on the black bar , the film was shown recently on anytime and skewed to the top of the screen with the black bar twice as large as normal on the bottom , the subs were there.

Ive seen Hong kong movies with subs down the side and along the bottom in two different languages and so on , theres no standard solution because theres no standard subs , that the real problem.
