Re: Review: Panasonic's G10 and V10 Plasmas

I plumped for the 50" G10 because I had doubts as to whether the extra money for the V10 was worth it...

would 99% of people notice the difference? I think not but hey thats just my opinion!

Either way - youre getting a great TV though!

Re: Review: Panasonic's G10 and V10 Plasmas

So the V10 is recommended over the G10 basically only because of the THX mode. I'm wondering though if this also applies to the models outside the UK, since those seem to have more color calibration controls. It's a shame that you haven't been able to compare the same models in a non-UK version and see if you would come to the same conclusion.

The European models have greyscale controls in the user menu and a gamma control. They don't have any colour controls i.e. 3D colour management for RGBCYM. None of the Panasonic have this, even the pro range(They have a silly on/off switch on a feature with that name, it offers no management). Because of this, THX mode is the only way to get colour close to correct on a Panasonic plasma at this moment in time. You have the same controls (bar gamma) in the service menus of the UK sets and a professional calibrator will be able to set the greyscale correctly for you. However you cannot improve the colours which are wide and oversaturated. That's why THX mode is so highly thought of, it gets the colours close to being correct, with some slight errors and the greyscale is also fairly good. You can't do that any other way at the moment.
However, we have presented the calibration advantages to Panasonic directly who are pushing their case with Japan for next years models.

Re: Review: Panasonic's G10 and V10 Plasmas

Is it best to use THX mode for all movies? In the manual it says to use it only for THX discs and use cinema mode for all other films??

Whoever wrote that manual wants to be shot! THX mode is accurate as possible to industry standards, so you can watch all material in that mode. It really doesn't help that Manufacturers don't even understand the technology they put in their sets, the manual is a good example of that.

Re: Review: Panasonic's G10 and V10 Plasmas

My dilemma is that we'll be sat 6ft (eyeball-to-screen) from our screen, apparently the largest screen we should be viewing at that distance is a 46". Apparently we'd be able to see the pixels with a 50" screen at 6ft. So...

42" V10 or 46" G10?
(this is for movies (BluRay & DVD) plus PS3 gaming at 720 and 1080)

Thanks for comments.

Re: Review: Panasonic's G10 and V10 Plasmas

I'm currently the owner of my 2nd doomed Toshiba 46zf355 with the vertical line problem. I have a credit no which I have passed on to LeConcepts. I have been waiting for Tosh's new range of tv's to come out, 47zv635 and 46sv635 but the Pan 50V10 has caught my eye. The sv looks like its going to be massively over priced at nearly £2,500 so not going to add a grand to the price I've already paid. Tosh are taking ages to get these tv's onto the market any how.

I watch a lot of movies on Sky HD and play games on PS3 a lot (COD4 far to much, lol).

My concerns with buying plasma technolgy are probably old school but is there still issues with screen burn, especially when viewing films with the black bars at the top and bottom and do channel logos still cause problems.

I've always bought Panasonic but with most other major manufacturors pulling out of the plasma market it has made me have my doubts.

Can someone put my mind to rest. Panny will be a straight exchange for my defunct Tosh with nothing else to pay!!!

Re: Review: Panasonic's G10 and V10 Plasmas

hello

thought this threat had died, lol.

Well I bit the bullet and went for a panny 50V10. only got it a week ago and have just been using it normally, as someone said on the v10 thread 'I'm not paying £1500 for a tv and have to babysit it'.

I'm still in the 'wot have I done' stage with this new tv. Sometimes when you're watching a film in THX mode you are just in awe with the picture quality but a lot of the time its like you're struggling to see what's going on because the picture is so dark and most things have a yellowish tint but apparently that is 'as the director intended'. Was just so used to the brightness of LCD. IMO its all a bit dull. I'm very disappointed with gaming too, COD 4 looks very grainy with serious phospher trails, to the point that I am hardly playing any more and this was a major part of my tv's life before. if I could put the plasma back I would!

not sure about screen burn but image retention is still an issue. when the screen goes dark you can still see the ghost of any previous bright images on screen. You cant see them when the screen goes bright again but just another point to put you off.

No doubt I'll get slated for this but hey ho!

Re: Review: Panasonic's G10 and V10 Plasmas

I saw a 50V10 in sevenoaks yesterday and they let me play with the settings, I was trying to see if THX mode was worth £400 extra so I could decide between a G10 and V10. There is some difference and it was in the middle of a shop with florescent lights, but I'd say the difference was minimal. Tweaking the brightness and sharpness made a bigger difference.

If you think movies are too dark in THX mode, take it out and shove the contrast and brightness up, its your telly watch it they way you like, not what people on a forum say.

Not sure about games though I didn't try that.
