not happy with my tosh

I received my 51wh36p three weeks ago. the problem is i cant get the convergence right on user level, the picture looks out of focus on text on the right side, the picture tilts slightly on the left side. I dont think i am competent to do the tweaks that demon and nathen do. asking advice what would you do. read so much on this site about the toshiba tv starting to become confused. just wonder if i got a bad one.

Very possibly,brian...I've got one of the 50" sets and have had no problems with convergence, focus etc.
If you really are having problems that aren't solved with simple measures then you should get someone out to correct it...any other mods etc such as nathan has done will invalidate your warranty, and if you're not satisfied at such a short time since purchase then the store that sold it to you,or Toshiba UK should help you.

Try and send the set back mate and dont give up until you get one that you are happy with! The tweaks that Nathan make are complex and i dont blame you for not trying.

Good luck

You want to get an engineer out and point him to this thread...

To check for mechanical/electrical Focus, I've found the following to be the quickest test for determining if the mechanics/electro-static focus are acceptable.

1. Put the set into Service Mode
2. Bring up the Service Level Convergence Menu (7 on the remote if in PAL WIDE via RGB etc), or the Yellow Button if via Component/NTSC
3. Switch on only the RED grid and look for scan lines, this should be very distinct in center, and although softer, should still be easily visible in the corners
4. Do the same with just the Green Grid
5. Compare the thickness of Horizontal/Vertical grid lines between the RED and GREEN grids, in all corners/center they should be approx the same.. and when the RED and GREEN gridds are on (Yellow resultant grid), there should be very little red/green haloing in any corner..

Blue is just too soft to really check, other then the halo'ing (i.e. where the grid is wider then the Red/Green grid, when all grids are on, their is a blue halo around the grid lines)

When properly set up its very easy to see the results.. the set looks stunning... (never scrutinise with your head a few inches off the screen, all crt's look bad when you do that!)

Although be warned.. do not get too critical... I used AVIA to set the TV Up afterwards, with the resulting values, which should be a starting point..

Contrast 50
Brightness 42
Colour 47
Tint +7 (Only for NTSC)
DNR 1
Sharpness +20
MODE - Active or Progress
Black Stretch - ON

Note:- the SKY Channel/time box always appears more out of focus towards the bottom right on larger RPTV's.. this is minor, and do not let it bother you.. I mechanically focused the set once, biasing it to this corner, and the result was horrible, the text is still slightly soft, but the Top left is then noticeable much worse.. and this is annoying!!!.. ignoring the SKY Channel banner, and getting a more uniform focus is much more rewarding..

I now use the normal Teletext to show screen focus, and this is a much purer source, so is a better test, and indeed it seems much better on this, then using SKY to provide the text..

Also, since I've had the set, and even after I mechanically focussed it, I was still very critical of text on adverts, etc, even though I knew the set was adjusted as good as it could be.. but I then went into curry's and looked at the 36" sets, and low and behold, get close, and these look just as out of focus.. in fact worse in some cases, and then the amount of artefacts you see on them is amazing....

Then, just before my brother sold his 46WH08, we compared his new set to this, side by side, and the 46WH08b (Which I thought had good focus, etc) looked very very soft, and just did not have the same black depth, or vibrancy as the 51"...

I have no doubt that the 51 when viewed from > 4 Feet is far better then any 36" I've seen, and that includes focus/geometry/Contrast/Balck Level/Black and White Detail..

And using AVIA, the colour decoder response is excellent, Red push when adjusted is +5%, Green is spot on, and Blue is -5%... very well balanced indeed... It has no white bloom or associated artefacts, even on max contrast/brightness.....

Get that engineer out, and as Boddyfodder says.. keep on at them until you get it sorted... but don't be too critical of 'soft' text on sky.. Use normal teletext.. its internally generated, so a fairer test, and do expect a slight loss of focus in the corners, but this is so minor in comparison to the actual PQ achieved with the set that it shouldn't cause a problem and should not ever be visible on normal moving pictures... You do see when the cameraman has not got his focus quite right as well.. this is apparent on sky, the set is that detailed and revealing!!!

For my sins I used to work at the Toshiba Factory down in Plymouth as a Technician/Engineer.. its where I "cut my teeth".. I still have lots of friends that used to work there, and in fact quite a few people that still work there, either on the production lines, or in engineering....

I'm no expert TV repair person (I always take my Hat off to 'real' TV repair engineers, as it can be a grey art at times).. I did all the test equipment electronics/software... but have 'some' knowledge about TV's.. after 5 years you'd think I'd have learnt something!!!! If only I can remember what that was
