PD30 HD compatible?

I have just got back from the US and saw that they have a Panny TV there that looks exactly the same as my 36PD30. They call it the 34WX53. The only difference appears to be that the US model is HDTV compatible (I assume it supports 1080i).

I was really impressed by the HDTV detail aned thought it was a shame that my PD30 couldn't display 1080i.

Today reading What Video Widescreen Entertainments review of the 32PD30 I notice that in the features is says "HD compatible with modification"!!

Does anyone have any idea what this modification is?

If anyone has the Sptember edition of the magazine can they tell me who the author of this (group) review was? Then I will try and email them to see what they say.

I ahve already emailed the techie email at the magazine and Panasonic themselves. No replies yet though.

I was in a Panasonic specialist shop. The manager there claimed the PD30s were used in Japan as a HDTVs

The PD30s and the new PX20 use Panasonic's high resolution tube. It can't be long before they start supporting HDTV. Especially with JVC doing getting ready to introduce their HDTVs.

Does anyone have a PD30 and a 720p or 1080i source to try with it?

Should be 1080i, since even the 34WX53 doesn't support 720p.

From beisammen.de:

NTSC XBOX with 720p output didn't work with the 32PD30D.

should read as ....720p(let alone 1080i).....
but this is speculation since XBOX cannot output 1080i.
Hope this helps.

It means "let alone 1080i" or alternatively :

"Not to mention 1080i" - but I just did

I haven't read the source so you'll have to put that in context with the rest of the original sentence.

toyyot,
Do you mean that the Thomson and the JVCs can't take 576p?

My original question concerned a modification that can be made to make the PD30 accept HD.

Therefore I would not expect an unmodified PD30 to accept a 720p or 1080i signal. I was just curios to see if it did.

I still do not have any details as to what the modification is. The PD30 is sold in Japan as an HDTV and the US version (34WX53) has an identical chasis. So it may just be that HD is disabled in the firmware of European versions of this set.

Hmmm... Thomson doesn't advertise the HDTV feature. In fact, they don't even mention if it does progressive.

Anyone seen these sets?

yes the xbox can output 1080i. Soul Caliber II supports this model, granted its 4:3 rather than 16:9. I think Dragons Layer does as well.

The JVC's can take 576P (625P) & 480P (525P). The HV32D25 certainly can. Don't know what other formats the newer JVC's can take.

I've still not heard anything back from Panasonic,What Video or from John Archer (author of the 36PD30 review in this months What Video) so I still have no idea how to modify the PD30 to take an HD input. I don't even know if this is a small, cheap mod or an expensive, major one.

Does anyone know of any companies that might know about such a modification?

So what happened?

I have noticed also that the 36PD30 is HD-ready in USA and Australia, Australia using our PAL system and it can accept 1080i/576p.

Would it be better to import one from Australia?

You can buy this set from AU for around the same amount as what the SD set cost in Europe.

Have you talked to Panasonic in Europe about this if there are any upgrade for it?

Any further news on this?
I have a PD50 and would love to enable HDTV especially as I have it hooked up to a media centre pc via component connection which can output 720p and 1080i. Doesn't work at moment but have fingers crossed someone has found out the mod and its a cheap and/or easy mod to do! ;-)

No but it helps to bump this thread every now and again in the vain hope that we PD30/50 owners can get 720P!
It is supposed to be possible! But I have never heard of a way it can be done!

Don't know about 720p, but I tried a 1080i signal over the component connections-no joy at all.

I have a Media Centre 2005 machine with component out and have tried every resolution possible through Powerstrip and only 480 works!
I'm sure it is possible through the service menu or something.
