Start up problems with a Toshiba 36zp18

Hi all, first time on this forum and I am not much of an electronics guy. I have a Toshiba 36zp18 purchased in Jan 2003.
It is connected to Virgin Media V Box and the service is cable. The set has always been turned on and off at the set i.e the remote is not used. The volume and channel changing are done via the V box remote. In the past the television has always come on immediately when the on/off switch was operated showing the programme selected on the V box. Over the past few days operation of the on/off switch has not brought the set on immediately although it sounds as if it is trying to come on and then apparently switches off automatically. The TV is connected to the V box via channel 9 and operation of this has ,on occasion, brought the TV on. What apparently seems to be working at the moment is if you switch the Tv on at the set then use the stand-by button on the remote the TV will come on after a short period. In addition over the last few days the TV has switched off by itself. I have confirmed the timer is off!! Any assistance would be super.
Regards
Rockford
