Red gun does not seem to fire in 32" CRT

[FONT=Arial]Can anyone help? I have a Toshiba CX32D60. Great TV, but lately, every so often the picture suddenly turns greenish for anywhere from 1 to 5 min and then it is ok. It seems that the RED gun stops firing. The change back and forth in color is NOT gradual. It is very sudden. Also, the change is very uniform on the entire screen. It also seems to be happening right when the TV is turned on, but that pattern has started to change where it could happen after the TV is been on for 30 min or so. The unit is about 12 years old. I know all the… time to get a new one, too old, etc. But this unit has a GREAT picture with hi-res lpi (it is a monitor). So I would love to save it if it is not too expensive.[/FONT]

First things first, does it happen on all inputs including the TV's own tuner? If it only happens on one input, check the cabling (a loose SCART cable can give the same effect).

If it's happening on all the inputs then there's a number of things that could be wrong, such as component failure on the CRT baseplate, dry joints or a failing tube. Neither of these will be DIY fixable so your best option would be to ring up some local TV repair companies and get a quote.

This isn't a UK/European model and doesn't have scart sockets.
I suspect the OP is in the USA or possibly Australia.
It could be a dry joint or an intermittent short in the CRT.

This is a US model. The loss of RED happens on ALL the inputs. 99% of the time it happens either when the units is turned on (cold start) or within the first 2 minutes. It rarely happens when the unit has been on for a while (it is warm).

I am pretty good with hands on. Any ideas on how I could fix it myself?

Remove the back and with the fault present gently tap the crt base...it could be a dry joint...or gently tap the glass neck of the crt with the handle of a screwdriver...if this brings on or clears the fault...you've got a duff crt and it wouldn't be economical to replace.
Needless to say...observe all safety precautions...there are high voltages present.
