All three of the new models are listed but there is no picture. If this is the confirmed price of these then it sounds like a bit of a bargain as they are supposed to have progressive scanning!

looks like a bargain price, but i;m not sure if i like the newer look

one of the biggest attractions to the tosh was the thin plastic border round the whole picture - but it looks like they have started to add to that with shiny bits - which could detract from the picture itself. i'll wait till i see it in the flesh.

also, at that price, you wonder what they have sacrified to managed to bring the cost so low for the initial release of a brand new line.

The price reduction could be because of all the LCD and DLP rear-pros coming out.

Maybe crt rear projection sets are a dying breed.

Have phoned them up and he will be getting back to me with prices. Not too bothered that they aren't dolby digital as I am setting up my own 6.1 setup.

As long as it has Component, scart sockets and an improved picture than the current Toshiba RP range then I can't wait.

I think the new design is very nice. Much more modern than the current crop from toshiba.

Im curious of the 'new 7" High Brightness Black Stripe Screen'. I wonder if this makes the picture better or is just manufacturer jargon?

I think that nathan is the best person to ask on tosh RPTVs. Reading the specs that toshiba have gave shows that this model must have some sort of internal progscan like the pictureframe 2.

I would not be suprised to see full NTSC and PAL progressive from the component inputs.

Lets hope it can display HD 720/1080. Toshiba rptvs are so far behind compared to the US.

When HDTV comes available in this country thats when HD compatible sets will start to appear but i cant see that happening for a few years yet.

This model will probably use the same technology that is in the picture frame 2 sets and come with the same features (green trails).

My 50 wt29b is going back to the shop, due to a fault and I will be getting my money back. After reading this I'm undecided as to getting another or holding out for the new 51". Two things concern me 1) there appears to be no freeview facility, 2) will the top be able to support a centre speaker.

Can anyone advise me, I was about to buy the 50WT29B from robertson electrical then I saw this thread saying the new ones are coming out, would I be better to get the new model ?? But it looks like there are no rear speakers/dsp this is why they have reduced the price ??? I do want suround sound built in as i don't have a seperate system, also can anyone who has got the 50wt29b tell me how good the picture is ?? evertime I go into comet they have the colour / contrast all over the place and the picture does not look that clever and there are no remotes to change the settings, or can anyone tell me of any reviews on the net for this model as I can't find any, the last thing I want is to spend £1466 at robertsons on this tv and the picture is rubbish..

Its called "Convergence Protection"

(Translation)....

"Picture tubes are subjected to magnetic influences, which ensure koenen that the three basic colours of the television picture are not appropriate red, green and for blue completely one above the other. Slides entails easy Unschaerfen and colored edges at outlines. Past technologies could dam Unschaerfen only. Convergence Protection is the first picture-sharpening system, which preventing magnetic influences prevented, as the picture tubes are protected by a screen, similarly as with high-quality cables. Magnetic fields are derived in such a way, before they can affect the picture tubes. To the manual micro-adjustment constantly beyond that the digital convergence adjustment for the order."

Do any of the older models have this feature?

Magnentic fields do not affect CRT RP's. I have a huge speaker about 1cm to the left of my Toshiba RP, and another smaller speaker ontop of that. A huge centre smack in front of the RP. And the RP is in front of a radiator.

If I did that with a normal TV- nice purple effect on the screen.

The picture is not effected in the slightest.

Strange then that they would list this as a feature on the tosh web page. It seems that they have also updated the internal progscanning on the new range to "Pixel Processing" which in the manual says "has 50hz vertical scan but the equivalent of 100hz horizontal scan".

I made the mistake of having a look at the owners manual for the latest US model, the 46H83. Its like chalk and cheese! Far superior to the UK model, I mean WAY better and for roughly the same price! (Twin component imputs, DVI socket, one button auto-convergence, 720p/1080i, POP, etc, etc)

I was contemplating buying the new UK model but think I'll hold tight for the next generation (or 2).

I mean ***, do they think we are all backward here or something! Come on Toshiba, wake up and stop fobbing us off with products that are obsolete!

Note, the manual for this UK model only mentions 525 NTSC progressive input although I would be fairly sure that the set will accept PAL progressive. No mention of 720p, it MAY be able to handle it in which case that Momitsu V-880 720p/1080i DVD player will come in VERY handy! Personally I would assume it only goes up to 525p until someone confirms otherwise. Still, it would be a very nice picture even at that!

To be honest, most of these are bells and whistles, the important differences are the DVI input, twin component progressive inputs and ability to accept/display 720p signals (Hi-Def). The Hi-Def broadcasting standard has not yet been set in the UK/Europe but the simple addition of a DVI socket would allow UK users to use 720p from suitably equipped scalers/HTPCs/DVD players. The display from such an RPTV would be AWESOME

At the moment, this is but a distant dream Maybe next year we'll see Toshiba release suitably specced sets in the UK if Euro1080 does indeed start broadcasting HDTV and the newly announced euro HDTV satellite receiver gets released - hope so!

Other than a power adaptor, which if good quality could be used for spike protection and also clean steady power supply which I'm sure will have a benefitial effect on picture.

Scaler/PC to scale freeview/sky to 720P or are their sets PAL & NTSC capable ?

Would it be worth all the effort ? that's if we can purchase these models

Shipping would be a KILLER in more ways than one.

It would cost a small fortune due to the weight and size of the set. Also, the chances of damage during shipping would be very high.

I once had a 42" Toshiba RPTV shipped from Robert Whytes in Glasgow and it arrived in bits, god knows what would happen to it after a journey of some 4000 miles!

Not really an option, some things I'd risk, some things I wouldn't. Too big and too easily damaged.

However, if you could get one across it would work perfectly (but would be NTSC only although 99.9% of my DVD collection is NTSC so its not a show stopper). Would it work with an HDTV receiver? Well, possibly but thats open to doubt although as you said, there are ways round this if need be.

My advice, wait a year and see what happens. Chances are that we will see true HDTV sets released in the UK to meet the arrival of Euro1080 and the HDTV sat receivers. For the meantime wait and see if this years sets accept 720p in which case great otherwise a cheap projector would do as a stop-gap whilst we gnaw our fingers to the bone in anticipation!

I'm pretty much convinced that the addition of DVI input on the forthcoming new models would be at minimal cost but the chances of Toshiba doing that are NIL, they are still milking the UK market by way of obsolete models and are unlikely to make any spec changes before this "old" stock get sold out.
