My Sony KV-28WS2U will not switch on. The degauss comes on, but it doesn't go beyond that.

The right light flashes twice, pause, flashes twice...

Thanks in advance for any ideas about the problem and its severity. Am I looking for a repairer or scouring the classifieds?

A very common problem on Sony tv`s.The led flashes twice to indicate over current protection.The most common reason is a short circuit line output transformer/transistor.There is most likely a short circuit or low resistance to chassis on the main ht line.

Thanks Mechanic. Is this worth having fixed or is it a standard, uneconomic repair (like a tube would be for example)?

I would say if the picture quality was ok before this fault appeared then its worth repairing.At least if the transformer is faulty a replacement is likely to outlast the life of the tube.It may be that another component is responsible for the problem so an estimate is probably your best bet.

Thanks. I assessed the quality of the CRT by watching the same source (TV streaming from a PC with S-Video connection -- same source as ever) on a diffrerent CRT yesterday. I could do with a new TV.

Opportunity to ask: is it possible that the placement of the TV contributed to its demise? It lives in an unheated conseratory-type room. The oil-filled radiator there switches on automatically to protect the room from freezing. Of course I heat the room to watch the TV. In spring, temperatures can range from 35+ degrees to 10 in a single day; large temperature variations take place throughout the year.

Is its replacement doomed? Are LCDs better suited to such conditions?

I think it is very possible the wide temperature swings could have contributed to the problem you are now experiencing as electrical equipment and condensation /dampness certainly dont mix.And this is likely in this situation. High voltages from the line output stage used by the crt are especially suseptible.As far LCD goes i am not sure what the effect will have but maybe someone else on the Forum may have an idea.

Not that finding another CRT (esp. one with S-Video in) is looking easy at the moment...
