Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

Just to update the latest - the TV will be collected on Thursday (morning hopefully) and will then be inspected on Friday - hopefully then at some point early next week I should hear from them again...

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

UPDATE:

The TV was collected nice and early yesterday morning (Thursday) and this morning, by the time I got into work, there was an email from the sellers, confirming the fault, and that a replacement will be sent out and the couriers will be in touch soon to confirm when it will be delivered!

So as soon as I get the new one, will post up pics and hopefully this will bring this to a close

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

That's good to know they are dealing with it quickly, fingers crossed that the new set is ok. Did they take the stand too? Unpacking the two boxes was a chore but exciting at the same time.

I have mine fully integrated now, swapped my old xbox over for a 360, bought the HDMI/optical out cable and now have 1080p with 5.1 sound. I'm really loving what the 360 does, not only do I have HD games and access to HD movies via xbox live but you can play back HD videos burned to a DVD, the picture quality is superb!

I should have some new pics up next weekend too.

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

Hi Snake

Glad to see you are making the most of it now!

Had mine connected upto my 360 straight away so was a good test, looks great with games / upscaled movies - was going to download some of their HD movies but I saw it was only a "rental" so didn't bother... I am (hopefully) getting a popcorn hour media player for Christmas, so then I will be able to play all the full HD stuff I can get which I am looking forward to...

And no, the stand is still here, so all I have to do when I get the new one is plonk it back on the stand - I know what you mean about the stand, that took up most of the time of putting it together!

But then we all love fiddling with new wiring don't we

I swear if theres anything wrong with the new one, ill

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

Yeah, I couldn't believe just how many elements there were to the stand, it certainly looks quite simple but was fiddly and time consuming to put together, especially as I had to get the stand made first before I could use the tv.

The stand is nice and slim but because of this makes it difficult to put anything on it. My Mission 70c3 takes up most of the middle shelf and I couldn't fit my old xbox underneath on the bottom shelf. The 360 is a perfect fit height wise and slides in nicely, shame that the fat cables in the back force it to stick out beyond the lip of the shelf. My Dreamcast sits next to the 360 and all the cables are hidden away. I've just got my free months trial on xbox live gold so will be making the most of that, considering that there is a charge for the service, it's a shame you still have to buy content on top of that.

Personally, I hate all the wiring, it drives me nuts, especially all the cables that come out of my Denon 2803. One of the main plus points with the JVC for me was the ability to hide all the cables going into the set, it looks so much neater. All my speaker cabling has been carefully placed with the surround speaker cables in the walls.

I was comparing the picture quality of upscaled DVD on the 360 to the picture on my Denon 2800mkII and my initial thoughts were that the 360 was better. Having had a proper look, they are pretty much the same. It could have been my picture settings on the HDMI input being set to a slightly brighter level to the component input that made me think that. Both had very clean images with practically no noise and minimal blocking, which was completely invisible from where I sit. The fact that my Denon is region free and doesn't have fans spinning inside means I will stick with that for DVD viewing.

Just had a look at one of those Popcorn media players, they are well specced bits of kit, seems to play anything and everything.

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

Well sorry I am a bit slow in updating but, I am happy to report my replacement set is now back in my room and sat snugly on its stand!

Thankfully, it is hair free although still not perfect, the geometry is a tad skewiff again, and there is what looks like a small smudge in the central-ish part of the screen, although this is barely noticeable... I am resigned now to the fact that little things like this may be part and parcel of these particular sets, I certainly wouldn't want to go through the hassle of having it changed, again! Can't notice when you are actually watching stuff anyway...

I will post up more pics later if anyone is (still) interested!

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

Seems all very strange how 2 sets have a "dirty" optical path. Makes me think that these could well be some sort of factory refurbs. There really should not be any dirt or smudges visible with this technology. If they have been assembled in a clean and sterile enviroment then there should be no such nasties. Obviously if they have subsequently took apart for a factory recall/upgrade this may not have been done in such a clean enviroment. Just remember that these have a small image that is projected and magnified onto a mirror then a frensel lens. Any dirt smudge or foreign object will be visible to varying degrees depending on where in the optical path it resides and may indeed be amplified into something much larger than the foreign object is.

Cheers

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

Well it's quite small and faint, its hard enough to see on a plain white background, but when there is an image on the screen, which is pretty much all the time anyway, it is picture perfect, I forget it's there!

So I am going to keep this one, if it gets on my nerves you can come and clean my optical path if you like

I think for anyone who is interested in buying one of these sets, bottom line is your a getting a massive TV with a great picture quality (I can't wait to watch some proper full HD stuff on it) but be prepared for a few little niggles (geometry not 100%) or little marks on the screen - you may get one with none of these problems - but if you can live with this, then you will be happy!!

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

It's good that you got a replacement but from the sound of it, it's not much better , a real shame that. But if you say it is ok to watch then it's not all bad. You are getting a lot of tv for the money.

To Scooby, these sets sold by Digital Direct have a disclaimer on the webpage that states that they have some manufacturer imperfections, so although it is a disappointment, you can't expect them to be perfect. They are considerably cheaper than my 58" for that reason.

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

The Digital Direct sets actually state the imperfections are just the thumbprints in the corner - hence the hair for me was a defect which I wasn't told about, so I sent it back, and I am glad I got a replacement, while there is this tiny smudge there now, it is much less noticeable, to the point where when I am watching stuff or playing games I forget it's there, whereas the hair was visible pretty much all the time.. so I can live with that!

Like you say man, lot of TV for £999! It will do 'til I get my projector setup... and I'll probably have to move house before thats likely to happen so glad I've got this one

Yep it is a bargain and would not take much to sort. I wonder if JVC know what happened to the sets to create the fingerprint??!!!

did they tell the world then or is it a dark secret?

I'm guessing it was monday morning, and some one forgot to wear his gloves while he was carrying the screens around... or it was the work experience boy!!

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

It was caused during transport from the pressure around the edge of the screen. This flexed the screens slightly and made the marks.

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

Ok so there was some deflection between the lenticular and frensel lens or is there a 3rd part to the screen (protective layer) that could be removed. Thanks for giving us the info very interesting wonder that there could be some that are not affected. Guess this is why they are knock down prices plus of course 95% of the consumer population prefers form over function

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

I can understand how that could happen. The frame around the screen is so thin, it makes transporting one of these sets a little tricky, warping the frame and in turn damaging the screen. They are well built but compared to my hulk of a Hitachi I had before, they do feel a little fragile.

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

Hi all,

Currently have an old 55" SD Pillips rear pro TV and I'm looking to upgrade to HD - I'm very interested in one of these unfortunately i'm at the other end of the country to the only stockists i can find - what's the picture Quality like on these and how obvious is the fault on the scren that's mentioned so often ?

Re: Jvc hd-ila 65" - hair on screen???

Hi,

I don't think you would have much luck finding many stockists of this, I spoke to a few of the listed stockists before I bought mine and they had long since sold out...

I think the picture quality is superb, I only have a 50" HD-ready to compare to but will (hopefully) after Christmas have some proper Full-HD material to view on it to comment properly on its capabilities in that respect - but I am still gobsmacked everytime I use it, and thoroughly enjoy playing on my Xbox on it night after night which looks fantastic

The fault on it, the marks in the corner, I think it will depend on each set but you will only see them if you are looking for them, in normal viewing you would be hard pushed to find any fault with it.. I still think it is a bargain for a full HD TV of this size, maybe next year with the world entering a year of doom and gloom it will bring prices down, but as it stands, I would recommend it...
