Sharp SX66NF8 - change PAL settings?

Hi,

I have recently returned from Australia and brought home a Sharp SX66NF8 television. It is picking up the picture signal perfectly but the sound is distorted with noise. I can hear the dialogue but I can hear the crackling more! A friend suggested changing the PAL settings however I cannot find where to do this on the menu. Another suggestion was to change the country settings to Ireland however again I cannot find how to do this. I'm wondering is there a hidden menu via the remote which will allow me to do this via a specific sequence of buttons? Any help or advise would me much appreciated. I tried Sharp UK and they only help on UK televisions.

Thanks

This is a fairly modern TV, so the likelihood of an option to change the audio setting should be present in the engineer/ service menu. I can't confirm this for sure though.
Your best option may be to use a Freeview box with it, as this will bypass the TV's tuner circuitry.

Re: Sharp SX66NF8 - change PAL settings?

Hi NST,

Thanks for this. I have a digital tuner which I might try and run the signal through. I presume this should do the same as a freeview box? One other suggestion I've got is to change the chip set that controls the audio in the TV but it sounds like an expensive option so I'm keen to avoid this.

Cheers,

Re: Sharp SX66NF8 - change PAL settings?

Hi, any external tuner box (Freeview/ Sky/ Cable) plugged in via the SCART or A/V will be fine. It's the cheapest option as converting your TV may be uneconomical, especially if it is not DIY fixable (via service menu). Even calling out an engineer to tinker with the settings would end up costing more than a basic Freeview box!

Yes in some TV's, especially older (or simpler) ones, the sound filter crystal would need to be changed from 5.5MHz to 6MHz, to work on the analogue PAL format in the UK (PAL-I). It's sometimes not as straight-forward as it looks, as the whole tuner module may have to be swapped (expensive).

Thanks again, I'll go for the digital tuner first and see how I go...
