Discolouration in corners of screen

Hi,

I have just acquired a new 36 in Sony KV36F570 TV (second hand), i know for a fact that it was working fine when i collected it. When lifting the TV up the stairs it took a slight knock which caused some superficial damage to the front.

When i hooked up my freeview box the screen now has some discolouration in all four corners.

Can anybody tell me what has gone wrong and whether it is possible to fix?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Discolouration in corners of screen

These are known as purity errors.

Best case - The screen just needs degaussing. Put the set in the place you want to use it, then switch it off at the mains for 10 mins. Power on and check. If that improves, but does not eliminate the problem, repeat it.

Worst case - You've dislodged the shadowmask (a metal screen just behind the face of the tube) when the set was knocked. If that's happened, the tube is knackered.
