X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

Hi, hope you can help. My X-Box 360 is currently running in to my Tosh 36ZP38 using the component lead set to "TV" not "HDTV" and so guess running at 480i. However I am sure that when I first set it up I had it on "HDTV" (this is the switch on the component lead) and is was set in the xbox dashboard to 480p. Since I have tried to change to 720p or something and had to change again. I have since tried this again (480p) but just get a black screen. I don't see why this won't work as the Tosh is 480p compatible.
Anyone any ideas? Am I just imagining it? Do I need to set the Tosh to "Progressive ON" or "Progressive OFF!". Could it be something to do with the 50/60Hz refresh rates?
Anyone?

Cheers, Liam.

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

It should be set to HDTV, and then simply select 480p from the dashboard. That's all I've done with my 32 so it should work.

If you don't mind me taking this slightly off-topic, how is your Tosh with a PS2 or gamecube (or anything older), if you've tried it that is?

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

on mine, if i plug my xbox into a hdtv and output 720p, i HAVE to switch it back to 480p first before plugging it back into my tosh. no idea why.

otherwise when i select "HDTV" on the lead, i will get a 720p setting(which shows up as blank).

if i then switch to normal tv and thus 480i, i can get to the options to select 480p, but when switching back to the "HDTV" mode, it still outputs 720p. the only way i have found of going back is to plug it back into my hdtv and select 480p again.

hope that helps.

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

Thanks for the advice but I still can't get it to work! I have it set to 480P in the settings but HDTV is disabled (as the switch is set to TV). If I put the switch to HDTV then the screen goes blank. Switch back to TV and it reboots in standard mode. I can get to the HDTV options screen and if I try changing to 720P or 1080i it will try and change and then obviously go back to 480 as it can't display anything else but still can't get 480P
Help!

Sorry, forgot to mention I also have a Gamecube and that looks lovely through the RGB scart input!

that what i am trying to explain (badly). in order to change the HD mode, you NEED it connect to a hdtv and the switch on HDTV.

Do this:

1 - plug into a hdtv which supports the 720p the machine is stuck in.
2 - switch to "HDTV" on the switch
3 - boot up
4 - change to 480p
5 - plug into 36zp
6 - now in 480p

it's a bug, you cant change the progressive settings (although you can access the option and you think you have changed it, you havent) when the switch is in "TV MODE".

hopefully explained it better this time.

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

Thanks fella, that does indeed make it a lot clearer but I don't have a HDTV!
Is there any way to reset the XBox display to it's default settings as presumably it was set to 480p via the HDTV switch in the first place?

Cheers, Liam.

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

Hello all

If you go the System blade on that 360 dashboard and look under the Network settings you will see the option to reset to factory settings. If you reset to factory settings the 360's HDTV settings should go back to 480P. If you are on Xbox live as well you should make a note of all the network settings and IP address etc as these will also be reset if you take it back to factory settings.

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

Frank, I was about to ask you if you meant the re-install from scratch option as I couldn't find what you said but I see you have made it clearer so I will check again tonight! All my ip settings are set to automatic so I take it I won't need to note anything down? And I take it that this won't delete any of my logins or game saves or achievements or anything will it? Does the same apply to the re-install from scratch option as well?
Thanks again, Liam.

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

HI, as a follow up I did as you said and reset the network connections but it made no difference! Will running the "Initial Setup" on the system blade reset the video settings and will it cause me any other problems with save games, profiles etc?
Cheers, Liam.

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

Hello Liam sorry I did the first posting from memory without looking at my dashboard and I thought the "reset to factory settings" would reset the video settings as well, the description said that it would take the console to as it left the factory not just the network settings.

Running the initial setup wont do harm, and might sort out yr problem. I have a 32" JVC CRT that supports 1080i and a monster HD component cable that does not have a switch. My 360 is set to 1080i @ 60hz. I have just run the initial setup to check what happens and it asks for language and region and then asks about HD video settings and gave me the option to change the setting!!!

I dont know if, when you run the initial setup, as yr 360 component cable is set to TV if it will give you the option to change the HD settings but I hope it does.

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

Hello again, I tried the initial setup agauin last night and nothing happened!
It asks for language and country and the 50 or 60hz and then thats it - you can then go to the HDTV settings but as soon as I switch the cable over to HDTV the screen goes blank!
Any ideas?
Liam.

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

Cheers fella, I phoned microsoft yesterday and all they could suggest was to reset the video settings by restarting the box and holding "Y" and the Right Trigger but that doesn't seem to do anything either! I think I'll just give up!

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

After experiencing a similar problem, there could be one solution, I used it when 1080i became unavailable on my 36ZP48 after an Xbox 360 update. NB It may not work for dashboards set to 720p?

1 Make sure HDTV is selected on the component cable and all leads are connected to the TV.
2 Put in a DVD into the Xbox 360. It should load the film automatically and display your film in progressive scan.
3 While your film is playing. Press the Xbox button in the centre of your controller. This should gives the option to return back to the Dashboard.
4 With this, I managed to returned back to a 1080i Dashboard that previously could not be seen,. There, I was able to change the display settings back to 480p.

Having not tried this with 720p, and as 720p is a higher resolution progressively than 1080i, it might not work on the 36ZP38n - the Xbox might just revert to displaying 720p?

Best of Luck!

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

Sooby, spot on my friend! Put a dvd in the 360 and rebooted with the av cable set to HDTV and it automatically changed! Managed to get the dashboard up and it was set to 1080i. Set it back to 480p and the games run fine!
I am not sure what you mean about the 720 though? Will the Tosh take anything more than 480p or should I just leave it alone!?

Thanks again, Liam.

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

Very happy to help! I meant if the settings on your dashboard were changed to 720p, then using the DVD method I found to fix your dashboard might not work as a 720p resolution cannot be displayed on the 36ZP48.

The 36ZP48 with some service menu adjustments can still show an 1080 interlaced 'HD ready' picture after using the DVD method explained, and as you found when you went back into your dashboard. To play a game at this resolution, at the dashboard, you simply eject your DVD and put in a game.

However, to display the signal correctly, you would have needed to adjust the settings in the Toshiba service menu. If your geometry and brightness is not set correctly, 1080i will look misaligned and dark. The Toshiba only displays the signal if you do not change over, and stay on EXT4.

Service menus are a bit of a fiddle, and if you use your TV for more than gaming, as most of us probably do, there is always the risk that you may lose your original settings, or (potentially) cause your TV damage, if you change any of the other settings.

However, with a bit of know-how and care, and if you are happy putting in a DVD before each game, you can certainly get 1080i on your Xbox looking rather splendid on a Toshiba 36" Pictureframe CRT. Searches on the net offer some useful readings on the changes to width, height and horizontal position including: http://www.stevelarkins.freeuk.com/toshservmenu.htm

NB. If unsure of the risk, I would not recommend changing anything, and would just run the Xbox 360 in 480p.

All the Best! Sooby!

Re: X-Box 360 on Tosh 36ZP38

Hi. Just to add a bit of very cool information. There were someone one here almost 2 years ago that got 768p running with a Samsung HD DVD player. You can probably still find the thread if you have patience enouph it must be here somewhere. From his experience 720p didn't work at all, but 768p did, and it made a difference. It's only 60Hz maximum though, and for most sources in europe are 50hz which is a pain, even if the image is progressive. Still better than 50hz I guess, I just don't like flicker at all personally.
So there, I actually regret sending mine back now

Cheers
José
