My Philips OnDigital ( aka Freeview) receiver manual states:

Resolution: up to 720x576 pixels.

Are there any other receivers, Sky or Terrestrial with better resolution?

Does anyone transmit in this resolution, e.g. What is the resolution of BBC1? Is it show dependant? Is Eastenders the best pic broadcast?

That is the resolution used for PAL frames of video.

The ITU-R 601 spec for PAL resolution is 720x576 non-square pixels covering all the acitve video.

That won't change until we get a high definition standard.

It's the difference in compression used by B-Sky-B compared to Freeview that gives the quality differences seen today.

So is BSKYB higher resolution than Freeview?...supposing that the set up is working properly with very good signal quality.

Is it true that freeview has increased its bandwidth since ITVDigital´s demise and sky is pushing for vhs standard broadcasts to cram more channels in?

The resolution I'd expect to be the same. What is differeent is compression.

I have Freeview, not Sky, so can't give a fair comparison opinion.

But Freeview is supposed to have fewer channels so they can have a better compression ratio, and it's a fixed allocation. It's hard to tell if there's been any quality increase. The BBC channels always looked better than ITVDigitals extra channels.

Sky uses a variable compression allocation. My parents, and sisters have Sky Digital. It doesn't look any better. Well, worse if anything as they haven't really optomised any settings.

I have alway thought that Digital Terrestrial at its best was better than Sky.

Now all channels use a decent bandwidth the quality is actually quite good!
