Philips ratio switching

We've had a Philips PH32W6526 on rental for a while and it's a great TV, but I've never quite worked out how it handles ratio switching. Most of the time it switches exactly when it should, even on terestrial C4, but sometimes gets stuck in either 4:3 or 16:9. I can generally fix this by setting it manually on a widescreen source then changing to terrestrial and setting that, but it's a bit unobvious.

There doesn't seem to be an Auto/Manual setting, so how does it know what you want?

The other issue is with 4:3 DVDs playing in 16:9 and the TV refuses to stay on 4:3, but that may be down to the DVD. Sometimes my better half gets it working right on the kids' DVDs, but not intentionally.

Any ideas?
