What is the best solution for VGA to Scart?

Hi everybody.

I wonder what is the best and cheap way to connect PC to a CRT TV via Scart or 3 colors cable(I mean Yellow,White,Red)?

Which connector or device gives the best image quality?

Probably s-video so go that route if it's available to you, it's also the most supported. Composite can be done depending on your graphics card but both of them are going to be horrible for actual PC usage. Certain gaming/movie watching should OK, though.

I know but my tv doesn't have a s-video input. So i nEed a vga to scart converter or soemthing.

The best results would be obtained by using some sort of VGA to RGB SCART converter, where the VGA signal is actually output as RGB rather than Composite. I'm not actually sure how much that type of converter would cost though, try some Google searches and see what you come up with.

Re: What is the best solution for VGA to Scart?

Hello,

I think that you are looking for something similar to this:

http://www.nexusuk.org/projects/vga2scart/

It is a site that will show you what you have to do to create a cable that will convert from a 15 pin VGA plug to a Scart Plug. The main difference between the two connectors is that the VGA/Monitor signal has a seperate Sync signal for Horizontal and Vertical, whereas the Scart is expecting a single or composite sync. You can see this in the simple circuit.

Once you have built the cable, you will also need to use a program such as Powerstrip to set the PC so that it will output an interlaced video signal that TV can accept, which is different from the progressive signal a monitor will normally accept.

All this is explained a lot better on the Nexus site.

This is obviously a DIY solution, there may be off the shelf alternatives, but you will probably still need to use something like Powerstrip to adjust the image you PC is outputing.

James

Re: What is the best solution for VGA to Scart?

Depends what you mean by VGA to SCART and what you want to do with it.

It is possible, with some Radeon video cards, to build or buy a simple cable that will connect a VGA video output from a graphics card directly to an RGB SCART socket on a standard TV. Using Powerstrip it is possible to get the Radeon to output a standard 625 line 50Hz interlaced (aka 576/50i) 4:3 or 16:9 desktop. It is close to unusable for Windows - with overscan and interline flicker making it very unpleasant - but for video (Windows Media Center particularly) it works MUCH better than either the TV output from most video cards, or a scan converter (which converts a 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768 signal to standard TV) - as it displays the video 1:1 line mapped and at 50Hz.

It helps immensely if you have a second computer (I used a laptop) that you can use to VNC remote control the PC so that you can alter the settings in Powerstrip when you can't see the video output of the PC!

However - re-reading the second part of your post where you mention 3-colours cable (Red, White and Yellow) it sounds like you want to feed your TV composite video (yellow) and audio (red and white). For this you will need a 3.5mm jack to stereo phono cable for the audio (Red and White) and either a video card with a TV out socket or a scan converter (VGA to composite) - the latter are not incredibly cheap, and in some cases it could be cheaper to replace your video card with one with a TV out rather than buy a converter.

Re: What is the best solution for VGA to Scart?

I have geforce 6600 TDH and 6800GT vga. My tv is a 32" BEKO 100Hz with 2 Scart,1 Svideo, 1 composite. I figured out that when i press AV button on the remote it switches between AV1,AV2,S-video,VGA. What is that VGA means? Tv doesn't have a VGA input
