will the CRT make a comeback ??

in the short term NO ! LCDs and Plasma s have ruled the roast for a couple of years still good life in them . there problem is the shelf life of 60,000 hours or less. CRT s lasted up to double this//// But hey there is a new enemy on the Horizon its called the organic screen tv . this is all part of the ozone thingy . Manufacturers in the next 5 years will have to replace the plasma and LCD tv with a new "save the ozone " or get kicked in the shins by the worlds govts.. The organic screen will replace them in under 5 years (for computers) and 10 years or less for TVs but i have a funny feeling the CRT s are going to reappear !!! Why they last a hell of a lot longer and still able to be serviced.. !

Re: will the CRT make a comeback ??

60,000 hours is to half brightness. CRTs had a much shorter half-life, it just wasn't advertised.

I doubt CRTs will ever come back, people don't want bulky TVs anymore. (otherwise LCD/Plasma would have died off years ago, as the picture quality on them is crap)

haha it's not going to happen and I like CRT's and still use two of them and I am looking at one right now to type this. I don't have a plasma or LCD in my house and don't intend getting one.

But CRT's and Plasma or even LCD's are not it, they used too much electricity, they are not save the planet friendly.

Re: will the CRT make a comeback ??

I read that Japan has had high-def broadcasts since 1994, so that means that their CRT TV's would have been high-def compatible for ages. I wonder if they were just large SVGA monitors?

The French one had a 819 line standard many years before we had 625 in the UK.

It would be great if somebody could take a gamble a start releasing brand new crt set or ship crt sets released in europe to the uk (Philips spring to mind here), I think there is still a profitable market for a smart manufacturer or even an importer out there to exploit.

I went to Japan for the fist time in 1993 and saw an HD demo of the MUSE System. I was amazed at the quality - and how long it took for the rest of us to catch up.

Re: will the CRT make a comeback ??

Yeah Japan had HD CRT since the mid nineties, and t was all excellent quality. They were specifically made Tv'ss with TV function's and input's and did not share alot in common with a monitor as they were built specifically for Hd satellite and the ch which ran in NTSC and 60HZ.

What I'm trying to say is yes, some of them borrowed element's from the high end trintron monitor's of the time, but were really made for Tv and high def devices, not pc gaming etc..

The Japanese Hd set's from Sony, the Super Fine pitch model's were the finest tv's ever made for their size, 36 inch. They are still the benchmark, along with broadcast monitor's from which all other Hd set's are judged, America and Australia also got these high end set's, Australia being the only pal unit's that I know off.

I#ll take some pics of my 36 inch HD CRT Super fine pitch Jap Tv tomorrow or saturday for you guy's.

Re: will the CRT make a comeback ??

Sorry to say but, no, the CRT will not make a comeback. Upsides of CRT:

-black level
-SD performance

Downsides of CRT
-Weight
-Depth/bulk
-Power consumption
-Emit radiation/flicker
-Screen size limit of 34"
-HD performance

To make matters worse, the upsides are probably the factors that the mass-market cares least about.

I'm not here to debate whether it's a good or bad thing, but the CRT making a commercial comeback in the public sector is literally zero. I know that there are many many CRTs in homes at the moment, but when they finally break they will be replaced by flatscreens and that's all there is to it.

Also the idea of the CRT returning as a green alternative is completely ludicrous, they emit radiation, are harder to dispose of, use masses more electricity (when on and in standby) and are no harder to repair than a CRT. I personally had a CRT repaired early this year and they literally replaced the entire tube and internals, the only thing that was the same was the outer casing.

........
Probability of bad and uncorrectable geometry
Probability of bad and uncorrectable convergence
Probability of bad and uncorrectable image "bounce" with changing brightness levels (inadequate power supply)
50hz flicker, or 100hz processing artefacts

Re: will the CRT make a comeback ??

the biggest factor is that no one wants a big bulky tv when they can have a nice slim 37 or 42 lcd or plasma in their living room

Ruled the roast? I like a good roast, but don't fancy one cooked by a TV
