Philips CRT manual tuning help

My father-in-law has a 31" Philips widescreen CRT which is at least 8 years old. The manual is lost and the original remote control has been replaced. He recently had a new set top box supplied by NTL which does not have a scart connector and is connected by a standard aerial cable. The problem is that I cannot find any way of manually tuning the TV. There is a drop down lid on the front of the TV but this only allows you to change the channel and volume. I'm assuming the tuning was done using the remote. Any ideas how I can manually tune the TV to pick up the set top box?

Yes, it really is a box without a SCART connector - that's NTL for you!

I can't find the model number of the TV but I'll arrange for it to be pulled out as it will probably be on the bakc somewhere.

I have a 15", 20" and until today, sob, :-( 21" 21 year old Philips TVs. The 15" and 20" are about 4 and 3 years old respectively but I'd guess they're similar to your one.

Without the remote you simply can't access the Menu for manual tuning or anything else. If you can get another Philips CRT remote ie. not specifically for your model I'm guessing it would still work because both my TVs and slightly more recent Philips models I've seen in shops seem to use identical ones. But that is something you should check before buying. Surely it would make sense if you contact Philips directly to get confirmation.

But if I am right that would also suggest that if you go to a cheap independent remote replacement seller (easily found online) even if you can't match your model any old Philips orientated remote would work. The Menu function controls everything from picture, sound, special features to installation so all Philips dedicated remotes must come with that option.

Wierdly enough I am in the exact same situation as I have a 32" widescreen CRT Philips bought from a friend and the original remote is missing as he has just moved (typical!). I need to be able to tune the TV as it is will be a gift to my parents and they can only recieve a terestrial signal where they live

so I have been looking around for a remote for it that will allow me to tune it.

I can order an original remote from some website found on google but that is nearly £30!

I presume that with these TVs, if I can access the menu from some kind of remote that I will be able to get to a tuning menu?

I am considering buying one of the cheap All in one Philips remotes as they have a 'menu' button, I presume from this I could tune it?

Does that sound like a good idea?

Scrap that - i've just had a scan at my TVs manual and it says to access the installation menu (the one needed for tuning) it says you need to press the stop button (one with a square on) and the rewind/back button (the button with two arrow heads pointing left <<) at the same time.

The cheap all in one philips replacement remotes have these stop and rewind buttons on, do you think that I could use these to access this installation menu?

Sorry if it appears that i'm hijacking your thread danning - dont mean to! We both have the same problem though

It depends on the model.
Most of the later Philips models can access the tuning/setup menu with a press of the main menu button...but some of the slightly older models require two buttons (under a drop-down flap on the remote) to be pressed together to access the tuning menu.

It is a 32PW8608/05 so its not ludicrously old but its definately a few years old.

Having had a look at the manual I printed from the website, it says I need to access the installation menu (i.e. a different menu to the normal one) which is accessed by pressing the stop button and the rewind button at the same time.

Those all in one philips remotes also have these stop and rewind, forward, pause etc etc buttons on, so I was hoping that I might still be able to achieve access to that all important menu. What do you reckon?

Just an update if anyone is interested.

Borrowed a couple of Philips remotes and with the first one I pressed the two buttons that my TV manual said access the installation menu and nothing happened (the srop and rewind button), but I pressed two other buttons under the flap (as JayCee said) and that did access the Installation menu thank goodness

I'm just curious as to whether or not the all in one will let me access it. Presumably not though if the stop and rewind button didn't work on both the remotes I borrowed.

Danning - Might be better to try out a couple of remotes as I have. Good luck!

Thanks to everyone for the various replies. The model number of my TV is 32PW9523/05M. The original remote, which is broken, did have a flap at the bottom as mentioned in an earlier post. I will definitely try the stop & rewind button combination to see if that works.

I bet your TV is simmilar but slightly newer than mine as it has a higher model number lol

If the stop/rewind trick doesn't work then i'm sure any other philips remote that has that flap will be fine, it worked for me (unfortunately I cannot keep the remote it as it is borrowed, but as it is tuned now anyway I won't need it anyway). I've just bought a philips all in one remote which i'm waiting for which should be fine to change between the channels.

Baring in mind the universal remote is made by Philips - I'd be surprised at them if they didn't design it so you could at least tune a Philips TV... I suppose you'll know when it arrives

I purchased a SRU3030/10 Phillips replacement remote. I have tried every Phillips code and every combination of keys. No luck however. I have e-mailed Philips for help. Any advice would be appreciated.

Your model of TV and other Philips sets of that vintage require two buttons to be pushed together to open the tuning and store menu...as you say they are located under a flap at the top of the original Philips remote.
Rather than buying a "Universal" type remote you would have been better off buying a "Replacement" type remote for your model of TV...these "Replacement" types have all the functions/buttons of the original but at a fraction of the cost of the original Philips-made remote.
Do you perhaps know of a friend or family member who has a Philips TV bought around the same time...you could borrow it and have your channels tuned and stored in 5 mins.
If you decide to buy one just Google "Philips 21PT166A Remote" and that will return a few pages of suppliers.

I got no joy from Philips. Also, found several sites selling 'replacement' remotes. I will follow that route if I fail to borrow a remote.
