Why does this happen? Advice needed!

I have just installed MCE 2005 with all the latest drivers and the tv ouput is poor. The picture does not fill the screen properly and the top left and right edges bend in.

When I tested a trial version of Vista a few weeks ago, the picture was perfect. The picture fit the screen with no wavey lines and I did not have to adjust anything.

I have tried different versions of the ASUS and NVidia XP display drivers but it won't display a square picture and fill the screen.

Can anyone help?

1. Why would there be a difference in the output between XP and Vista drivers?

2. Any idea's how I can make the picture square and have straight lines around the edges like the vista output?

3. I have a 28" widescreen crt tv. I have looked on the net for information on the spec (i.e. hz and resolution) but can't find anything. What output would you recommend for my MCE PC.

Thanks

Mike

Spec:
Sony KV-28FX20u TV (conected via s-video)
ASUS M2NPV-VM Motherboard (using the onboard tv out)

I use the latest NVIDIA drivers. In the NVIDIA control panel, there's a Video & Television category. After selecting that, there's a Television category. Click on "Adjust screen size and position". That should enable you to fill the TV screen to the edge.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, I have managed to do like you said but I still get black bands across the top and bottom of the screen and if I zoom it too far I will lose alot of the picture.

Could be a aspect mode on your TV bending the image (some aspect modes use squishing on the sides to fill it within the screen) or bad geometry. As for missing image, sounds like overscan/ screen sizing issue. Can be solved by going to service menu, as with CRT's you usually have basic geometry and sizing options. You can probably correct overscan in the driver tab, but won't fix bad geometry.

You really need avia DVD and test from a normal DVD player, once you know TV geometry is sorted then HTPC will be too.

Re: Why does this happen? Advice needed!

Hmm - very odd. I have a Sony KV-32FQ80 connected to my XP PC by S-Video (by way of an S-Video to SCART adapter). I've had this set-up for a few years now with no problems at all. I can't imagine why you're having trouble. I adjust the picture with the TV set to 4:3 and then go to Widescreen. The desktop fits just fine on the TV screen and with my wireless laser mouse I can sit in my leather recliner and operate my PC in comfort.
Maybe if you can describe your set-up and settings in more detail it might help.

Re: Why does this happen? Advice needed!

My setup is:

MCE PC connected to a Sony 28 inch widescreen CRT TV via s-video and scart connector. If I select the 4:3 mode on my TV the line on the left and right side appear to bulge out slightly and obviously when I change it to the wide mode it appears even worse. Also I have zoomed in as far as I can on the NVIDIA control panel but I still have a 1cm black bar on the top and bottom. I have found out how to enter the service menu on my TV but I don't have a clue on what to alter.

Any help would be much appeciated.

Thanks

Re: Why does this happen? Advice needed!

Have you definietly confirmed the geometry is out? You should see it on all sources/inputs and all aspect modes.

Things like excessive contrast can knock out overall shape too.
If you don't know what you're doing, leave it alone.

I've setup CRT front projectors which are considerbly more complicated, but once you do that you know way around, and spot picture problems and how to correct.
