Philips 28pw6518/05 problems

Hi,

Just acquired a Philips 28PW5618/05 crt tv, and it has introduced two problems into my set-up:

1.) I am running a denon avr into the EXT2 av channel using s-video (therefore EXT2 is renamed to SVHS2). However, whenever I change source on my amp (i.e. from tv to xbox or such) the picture is displayed in black and white and rather than colour and then EXT2 flashes upon the screen (i.e. not SVHS2) as if it is a non s-video source seleted - which is impossible as it is the same s-video source from my amp which upconverts any composite feeds anyhow. If i change channel up and back down, the problem is fixed. Any ideas of a way to fix this without me continually having to flick up and down?

2.) Also, the tv doesn't seem to autoswitch between aspect ratios with the programs from my ntl (virgin) cable box, samsung SMT-2110C. Should it? Is it because the picture goes throuh a composite cable into my amp and not va scart directly into the tv? Again, any ideas how to solve this?

Cheers for any help/advice anyone could give,

Elliot

Re: Philips 28pw6518/05 problems

All Philips TVs have the AV inputs setup as...E1 RGB, E2 Composite and then you have E2 Y/C which is S-Video.
As to your second question you only get auto-aspect ratio switching when connected by scart.

Re: Philips 28pw6518/05 problems

Thank you for your response, I thought as much about the auto-switching via scart only.

As to the first problem, I am definately using the correct scart input on the back of the tv, yet for some reason the tv doesn't automatically detect that the input signal changes from s-video to s-video (i.e. doesn't change) and seems to think that it changes from s-video to standard scart and so switches the picture to a near black and white paleness instead. And as I said, flicking the av inputs up and down (to get back to Ext2) fixes the problem. Very strange

Re: Philips 28pw6518/05 problems

Re autoswitching, in my Philips 9509 it's a bit of a con; it does not auto switch, it stretches in a "clever" way. Check out the manual to know what to expect.

Re the other problem, I too have seen the TV lose its colour occasionally on switching source, even though I don't use an AMP like you. I agree, it's strange (except if it's consistent in your case, in which case it's a bug).

There is no video auto-switching on the EXT2 scart input on Philips TVs...as I said the 1st push on the TVs AV input button selects EXT1 which can accept RGB or Composite video...the 2nd push selects EXT2 which is Composite only...and a 3rd push selects EXT2 Y/C which is S-Video...i.e. if the TV is on EXT2 and you feed it an S-Video signal the picture will be in B&W which is normal behaviour for an S-Video signal into a Composite input...you need to manually press the AV input button once again to EXT2 Y/C for the S-Video signal...it does not and cannot auto-switch on the EXT2 Video input.

Re: Philips 28pw6518/05 problems

Thanks JayCee for the info on Philips TV behaviour.

Let me try to rephrase what I see to be the problem:

- The user selects EXT2 Y/C and does not touch the TV remote anymore.

- The user feeds this with an Amp that actually takes in a variety of sources and outputs them through the one S-Video SCART connection that goes to the EXT2 input of the TV.

- The user watches something (displayed properly) through the amp, in S-Video

- The user switches input *on the amp*

- The TV now displays from the same physical connection as before, but B&W.

Thanks for your responses so far guys. Aekostas has the right idea about the problem I am experiencing, although now moving most of my kit over to rgb, through a scart switch, so becoming less of an issue. Still an interesting problem though, I am just curious as to why when the feed into the tv doesn't change but then input selected on the amp does, it seems to think I've changed the feed from s-vid to composite

Re: Philips 28pw6518/05 problems

My guess would be that the amp temporarily interrupts the s-video signal when you change input, the Philips reacts, but then is not capable (as JayCee said) to go back to s-video.
