Picture too big for screen

Hi,

I have a Goodmans 28inch widescreen TV. All of a sudden the picture is too large for the screen. It's as if zoom is on all the time, but actually applying zoom 16:9 or using auto actually makes the problem worse.
This is on all feeds and sky is set to 16:9. switching between pal and rgb makes no difference.

When set to 4:3 the picture does fit in the centre of the screen but the sides of the image curve in to the middle.

When switching to 16:9 or auto the image is too large for the TV and the sky menu is off the bottom of the screen.

The TVs onscreen menu system seems to be in the correct place.

Any idea what is going on and how this can be resolved?

Cheers

Re: Picture too big for screen

Have you tried it on a different source, such as a console or DVD player? Is there the same problem?

Re: Picture too big for screen

Thanks for the prompt replies.

I've tried various sources, aerial (cable) scart 1 (Sky, DVD) Scart 2 (Sky DVD) and it's the same on all inputs.

When viewing sky, if you bring up the current programme details menu (not sure of the correct name), the bottom 1/3 of this is missing off the screen. The picture looks like a zoom is applied for want of a better description, but this happens in all zoom modes.

It was fine, but then sky crashed while I was away and the kids uplugged things and mucked with settings.

I've got Sky set to 16:9 and looked in all the TV menus but can't find anything to solve it.

Re: Picture too big for screen

If when trying the different modes such as 4:3, 16:9, zoom etc. appear to apply themselves to an already 'zoomed' image then I fear that your TV is most likely faulty. Especially as you mentioned a distortion when selecting 4:3. Sounds like a tube fault. I couldn't tell you how much it'll cost to repair, but if its an old TV, and more than a few years old, any repair money would probably be better spent going towards a new TV. Chances are that if you repaired this set, other things may go wrong soon after - its just sods law.

As a last measure, are you sure that there are no special 'zoom' features accessed via the remote control?

Re: Picture too big for screen

Probably manufactured by Vestel - see if its made in Turkey or has AK45 on the model label.

Providing its not set to zoom mode, or a fault in the line stage, unlikely as they dont tend to keep running

Then they are renowned for software corruption. Could be you need the microprocessor and memory chip replaced and the set re-programmed.

Some companies do not replace the processor as its expensive, but this only provides a short term repair.

Re: Picture too big for screen

Does the picture get bigger when you increase the contrast? Does it look less 'dynamic' than normal? If so, it could be a component failure in the flyback transformer circuit causing the EHT to drop. This is normally easy for a repairman to fix.
