Well I know the techinal facts behind HD Ready TVs etc.

One thing i am interested to know is:

Why does my old Sony Trinitron CRT that is not HD ready display SD and HD material better than many Hd Ready Plasma and LCD sets.

Bearing in mind i am using S-video so transfer the HD video from my pc and S-video supposedly does not support HD either.

1. The Colours are Better
2. More Detail (believer it or not)
3. Did i say better Colours?

Anyone experience anything like this from their CRT set?

The images transfered in HD are truely stunning.

Your PC is down-scaling the picture to suit S-Video.

yeh i am aware of that. But why does it look better? Doesn't make sense to me so was looking for some ideas.

If the source was HD then it wouldn't have the compression etc you see with Freeview. So you are starting with a high quality signal with a higher resolution than normal. Some of my Freeview and cable channels are weak and blocky from compression. Maybe it's that.

To be defined as HD a TV must have at least 720 vertical lines and be able to display 720p and 1080i pictures. It must also have a HDMI port that supports HDCP.

Thats the only requirement. There is nothing to say that a HD screen must look better than a SD screen. In fact i find most CRT's outperform even the best lcd/plasma's, unless they are feed with a really good HD feed.

p.s. most of the picture problems we see with SD content is caused by poor compression/ encoder (have a look at some of the shopping channels if you want an example). If you got a really good SD feed and compared it to a HD feed using the above method, you would not be able to tell any difference, because as you said s-video cannot transfer hd content and the sony tv can't display it.

When you think about it both qvc (or similar) and lord of the rings DVD are SD content and yet the DVD looks (and is) miles better when it comes to picture quality.
