'Colour patches' on screen.

Yeah, so um... I have a patch of yellow on one side of the screen and blue on the other.

TV's less than 2 years old, anyone know what this is all about and if it's easy to fix?

It sounds like a purity error...the crt has become magnetised.
Have you had anything containing a magnet next to it lately...such as a loudspeaker or any large metal objects?
Are you in the habit of leaving the set switched to standby all the time instead of switching off at the mains switch or pulling the mains plug out...if that's the case just leaving it switched completely off for a couple of hours should cure it.
All modern TVs automatically "degauss" themselves when switched on from the mains switch...this does not happen when switched on from standby...if that doesn't cure it more than likely the small device called a thermistor in your set is faulty or dry-jointed...in extreme cases the crt may be faulty.
Try it switched off at the mains switch for a couple of hours and if no change report back with the make and model no.

Re: 'Colour patches' on screen.

Hi, Sorry to hijack the thread but I also have the same problem on a Sony 32" widescreen TV. I have tried leaving it off the mains but with no luck. I still get green and blue patches particulary on one side. Any help would be much appreciated!

Any recommendations if there is any decent TV repairers who could look at this in the Manchester area?

Re: 'Colour patches' on screen.

Jimsco all I can recommend is yell.com or something.

Thanks JC.

No, I never leave it on standby and in fact always switched it off at the plug. No speakers near it (about 1.5 metres away but also not that powerful and not anymore).

I did have a hifi mini system underneath it - could that have caused it? If so wouldn't it be in the middle as opposed to the sides... and is there any way to fix it?

Many thanks.

It's not a d-i-y fix unless you're experienced in soldering and handling electronic components.

Re: 'Colour patches' on screen.

If the colouration is caused by the prescence of a magnetic field then remove any speakers that may be near the set. You can purchase a degaussing wand which plugs into the mains. You then point this at the screen in a circular motion gradually moving the wand further away from the screen.
Here's a link to purchase but maybe cheaper elewhere

No...relatively inexpensive to repair.
Just phone around a few places advertising in your local paper or yellow pages and ask for a rough price for replacing the "Degauss Thermistor".

If you read the thread thoroughly you will see that the OP has already discounted that.

This would be a waste of money because if the degauss thermistor is faulty the impurity will return.
Degauss wands are of use only to people repairing TVs on a regular basis.
