Samsung HD CRT

Do you know where the cheapest place is to get this tv? Cheapest I have found so far is £385 in Amazon.

I got mine from Empire Direct for £385 but they don't list it any more, as far as I know Amazon is the cheapest at the moment

Re: Samsung HD CRT

Ordered mine from Amazon a couple of days ago, was the cheapest I could find too.

Not bad considering the nearest competitor is the JVC which only displays 1080i is £600 on empiredirect.

I think a £600 JVC would only be 1366x768 res if your talking about a JVC LCD.

the Sammy will accept a 1080i signal, that doesn't mean it will display 1080i without scaling

Re: Samsung HD CRT

The Sammy has a max screen res of 1920x1080, unlike lot of other screens which are 1366x768 and since its a CRT it is already interlaced so it wont scale the 1080i input.

Re: Samsung HD CRT

The Samsung set doesn't look any where near as sharp and detailed as an lcd at 1080i. It's not a patch on the jvc crt either.

You're right, it doesn't. Infact the JVC 1080i crt has more lines than the Samsung set.

Yes but the JVC in question doesnt display 720p, that's what I meant when I said it only displays 1080i.

Re: Samsung HD CRT

You obv didnt do your homework before buying your 409 then, google for info or read multi threads here.

The initual rumour was the TV scales everything to 1080i but its been proven it can do 1080i and 720p and 480p.

I'm happy with my Z409, I didn't expect it to have 1080 lines. As I said earlier, it can accept a 1080i feed, but it can't show it without scaling

I haven't found any hard facts on resolution using Google or reading this forum, if you have please point me in the right direction. So far this is the closest I have come to hard fact

Question Re: Samsung HD CRT

Does anyone know if this TV can cope with an NTSC signal from a Multi Region DVD player? About 50% of my DVD's are Region 1 and NTSC. All the info I can find on this TV says it isn't NTSC compatible which I find a little hard to believe.

Re: Samsung HD CRT

Owing to the specs on Samsung's website for the 419 it accepts an NTSC input

Cheers. What about the 409 though. No details are on the Samsung site, but all the stores I've looked at show it as being not compatible - has anyone tried an R1 DVD with the 409?

Re: Samsung HD CRT

From what I've heard the 409 and 419 are identical except the 419 has a digibox built in. Oh and the 419 is all black, instead of silver and black. So I see no reason why it shouldnt work with R1 discs.

I should get mine between 18th-25th I can test for you when I get it.

only if I stick my head over the back of the TV. All CRTs will buz but some people do seem to have particularly loud Z409/419s

Re: Samsung HD CRT

Can't hear the buzz on mine unless you lean right over the slots at the back with the sound off.

Interesting link with the specs there; so can we take it that that is it?

Finally we have something absolutely concrete to show definitive proof the '409/'419 have at least 800 seperately scanned lines = true 720p
(and plenty for a CRT to interlace 1080i properly, right?).

I have seen occasional comments from some people claiming they were totally unimpressed with the HD performance of this TV and I have to say the 720p & 1080i stuff I've seen on mine is beautiful, really outstanding.

I can only suppose that those disappointed have been looking at low bit-rate HD stuff.

Resolution is not the be-all and end-all of HD, bit-rate is a major component (and some low bit-rate stuff I've seen barely looks any different to SD, so no surprises for anyone being less than impressed with that).

Re: Samsung HD CRT

I have had my 419 for 3 months and it does buzz but you only notice it if the sound is way down. It is a bit louder after switch on but dies down after 15 minutes.

360 HD picture @ 720p is really good

Re: Samsung HD CRT

Just spoken to Samsung - surprisingly helpful

The only difference between the 409 and the 419 is exactly as mentioned above - slightly different case and the 409 doesn't have a built in freeview tuner. The other gubbins inside is exactly the same.......ergo, both the 409 & 419 will accept an NTSC video source

Mine will be ordered very shortly - the Mrs doens't know yet - it'll be a nice surprise for her(?!?!)!!

Re: Samsung HD CRT

What's the situation with these TV's now, it seems that the more recently manufactured ones have less problems than the earlier ones that had bad geometry etc.

I'm buying a new TV, this TV (probably the 409) is a consideration but I don't want to have to spend days/weeks trying to get the picture right.

The other two TV's I'm considering are the TOSHIBA 32YT56 or JVC AV32T5, if I can get a good Samsung then it's going to be worth the extra £100 or so.

Re: Samsung HD CRT

Bought one two weeks ago. Geo is not bad but the out of focus picture, while not noticible watching tv, is terrible when using the xbox360. When I say terrible, I mean unnacceptably bad. An engineer is coming to look at mine tomorrow.

It's a real shame because the picture is amazing in the middle 80% of the screen with the 360
