Samsung 419 VS Sony 32V2000

Ok some of you may no I recently took back my samsung to get the Sony despite the fact I dislike some of the issues inherent to LCDs!

So the Verdict

I'll start with the obvious and go staight for HD performance on the 360 for both Movie trailers and games.

The Samsung didn't really stand a chance here - obviouly there are no edge focus or geometry issues, however the colour reproduciton and the detail are far better on the Sony than the Samsung. Also being a 8ms display the Sony suffers from no noticable ghosting (so far)

So onto freeview

The Sony's internal Freeview chipset is better than the Samsung as it doesn't buzz or crash, however I'd say on picture performance the Samsung was slightly better - although sat at a veiwing distance the difference is hardly noticable.

Surprisingly when it comes to colour the Sony beats the Samsung on pretty much all counts.

This is also true of DVD's although I haven't fully tried DVD through the Sony yet so I'll reserve judgement for now.

So LCD versus CRT argument rears its head - the 'black' argument still stands the Sony does do great black levels with little 'crushing' or loss of detail however watching DVD's in the dark will show that the backlight is greying the black borders not that much of an issue in the end as it's only the blakc borders that really suffer from this.

I'll add some more feedback once I've tried more stuff out.

On the whole and unsurprisingly the Sony is definately significanlty better than an off the shelf samsung 419 - If samsung got their act together an fixed all the major issues and released well tuned sets then it maybe a different story.

Samsung CRTs never had great black levels as they suffered from a lot of backscattering.
The old Philips tubes had a carbon coating on the back of the screen to absorb stray electrons which cause backscatter.
