Smile 32" CRT needed (£300-£450'ish)

Could anyone make a recommendation?

Main thing I want is a reliable set with good picture and no hassle. Not bothered about HD, would prefer DAB but not essential either. Must be new and with stand.

Just something to tide me over until the HD/LCD market settles down.
Thanks

Hi there,

OK, my friend bought a Toshiba 32YT56B the other day. This is a great set for £400 (Currys). I'd already seen one set up in Currys a while back and the only thing that spoilt it was some dodgy geometry which I'd told him may be apparent on his set. Turns out there was nothing to worry about. When I went down to set it up for him there was nothing I could find fault with. The picture was very good. If you do get one from Currys online there's a 2 week cooling off period too.

The set has a cool stand which is designed to fit only the Tosh and it also has integrated Freeview. The decoder is actually very good with many features.

The only letdown (depending on your point of view) is the fact that it's 50hz. I found the set hard to watch because of this, but I'm particuarly sensitive in this respect. The set has a very comprehensive feature list for the price. Things like seperate EQ for headphones are a nice touch.

Overall I'd say you can't go wrong for the money. I'm a very critical buyer too. There's a review over at Home Cinema Choice:-

http://www.homecinemachoice.com/

The review mentions some bulging along the top of the screen but there was no trace of this on my friends set. I guess it's the luck of the draw as with most CRTs.

Oh yeah, Currys have a special offer so you can get the set for £380 when you buy online. Here's the code: CURRYS20300

There are other sets I suppose. You may want to check out the JVC HV32P37S. This is a very good set with lots of features. You may have trouble finding one. Again there's a review over at Home Cinema Choice. I saw one of these for about £390 at Empire Direct the other week. It included the stand.

I bought a Thomson 32WM403 (100Hz) for £300 from Currys a few months back. They even threw in a free Thomson stand (normally £80+). Overall I'm very pleased with the set. Two RGB SCARTS would have been nice.

Anyway, I hope that helps. bye, kozmikoid.

Thanks for the lengthy reply!
My TV at the moment is a Philips 32PW6515 which I think is 50Hz, I've always thought it was 100Hz for some reason though. I take it you find a 50Hz screen flickers a little too much? The Tosh does look like a nice set.

I'll also have a look out for the Thomson set, I know what you mean why oh why don't they provide 2xrgb as standard i'll never know...
Cheers
