Recommendations sought for elderly viewer

An elderly relative is planning to replace an extremely ageing 26" 4:3 CRT TV with something which will give her a clearer, better-defined picture. I'm inclined to recommend a 28" widescreen model (the size available to house it precludes anything larger) but I'm very out of touch with the CRT market at the moment.

I realise of course that these things are pretty subjective, but are there any particular makes/models to avoid like the plague? Any that are especially recommended? The design and ease of use of the remote is of vital importance: simple, straightforward and with decent-sized buttons is what's needed.

Finally (and of course I'm about to go and check this for myself, but I thought I'd chuck in the question anyway) does anyone make a 28" CRT set with a built-in Freeview tuner?

Many thanks,

Bert

Nobody got any brands they want to warn me against? Or bargains they want to recommend?

28" widescreen, 32" at a pinch, Freeview integrated would be nice but isn't essential. Easy-to-use remote. Picture quality (obviously) is an important consideration.

Thanks,

Bert

Sorry you haven't had a reply but, as a Senior Member, you'll surely realise that "Which is the best TV?" (or similar) gets asked virtually every day!

Suggest you do a search, but remember what my old Gran used to say:

(1) If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.

(2) There's no such thing as a free lunch.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I realise that I was just asking the same old question, but sometimes that does throw up some brand new answers. Not this time, though...

The lady in question is inclining to getting a 4:3 set, believing (quite rightly) that since she can't accommodate a TV that's physically much bigger than her old one, a widescreen model would actually appear to be giving her a considerably smaller picture.

I don't know if this helps but Comet have got a 28" JVC Freeview TV (JVC AV28E50SK) for £329. Looks quite slim as well.

From what I recall Philips remotes used to be quite 'chunky' and Dixons have the Philips 28PW6720D Digital TV for £344 or a 28" Daewoo for £229.

No idea about the pciture quality/reliability on any of them I'm afraid but I suspect your choice will be fairly limited, although Tesco seem to have the widest range online!

Thanks for that, very helpful. I wouldn't have thought of Tescos - you must get a fair number of loyalty card points if you buy a telly...

You know you can buy giant remotes at the Post Office for elderly / partially sighted people, which should work on any TV.

I knew they were available but I didn't know you can get them from the Post Office. Thanks.
