My 10 yr old 29" dolby Pro-logic Phillips tube has given up the Ghost

I wasn't really ready to buy a new plasma yet..was hoping for the prices to drop a bit more,

However I've managed to borrow a 21" to keep me going while i check out the new purchase.

I just thought I'd ask for a second opinon on here as I saw a couple of engineers frequent

I have no reason to doubt the engineer that diagnosed my fault as he had nothing to gain, but as I still havent ditched it yet...

I have a 10 yr old Phillips 29PT828C/05 Dolby pro logic set
It started to take 2 mins to come on
then 10 mins/20 mins
to the point that over a 2-3 day period it eventually took 20 hours to come on
well the engineer just said without looking that it was the tube and a known issue(life of the tube) and wasnt worth replacing even if they did still make the tubes... he also pointed out the hue, and the lack of focus at the edges that we had noticed but had been ignoring I guess LOL


Sounded fair enough to me , and It owes me nothing, just thought I'd check if it sounded a fair assesment..

and if any engineers do pop in, what makes this set such a good tuner?? (it had idtv 100hz digital scan on the front if that helps, the IDTV bit I mean)
It picks up things it shouldn't (shame I cant make use of the tuner LOL )

There's possibly still stock of the tubes - try Philips service, but indeed it sounds like a tube problem - low emission from the cathodes.

Havent worked on this model but it could be the tube.Without taking the back off it is impossible to say.
It could be capacitors in the psu at the age of the set.

Certainly some leaky caps could cause that.

What they are trying to say, is, it might not be the tube, but would you spend £50 ish to find out.

Not worth it, unless someone is saying a little more than "could be".

Yeah thanks Guys..
As I said he was straight enough and explained that he could probably sort the picture at the time by altering the voltages of the 'guns', but that it probably wouldn't fire up the the tube at all the next time it was turned off...
said the tube would be £300-£350, but then that they couldn't get them any more ..

No problems...I'm not willing to throw any more cash at it as the plasma replcement ids gonna wipe me out LOL

As I said The tuner Is the biggest loss, as it picks up way more than any other video/tuner/telly ... Hopefully when I get a new replacement the tuner will be as good
