Flat screen CRT!!!

I’ve just seen this, a thin, HD ready, low cost, CRT. Wow I think I want one.

Wrong forum, this is an LCD TV forum.

Agreed, however If this TV is any good, I think a few potential LCD buyers may just buy one (I might!)

Me 2 been looking at 32" Lcd now and having owned 2. My opinion on them is they are not of mechantable quailty. The complaints on this very forum back this up and dont let anyone tell you any different.

I think this is a relevant post for the LCD forum as many posters here are struggling to justify that LCD purchase in the light of inherant motion and contrast issues with LCD.

I for one would like to see this TV side by side with a well spec'd LCD doing High Def football or some other fast moving sports to see what the picture difference is like.

I wonder also, will the 32" CRT have a 32" viewable screen as a 32" LCD would or is it going to be the standard approx 2" smaller as the 32" refers to the tube size.

Hmm, i find this very interesting, i could not get a 32" standard CRT where i want to put one but i could get one of these there and if the quality surpasses current LCD models and it offers HD for my xbox and telewest TVDrive and the price is a third of what i would spend on an LCD then its hard not to give it some serious consideration.

That's fantastic, HD CRTs in Europe at last. Nice to see Samsung keep going to make HD affordable for everyone.

Nothing wrong with this thread!!! The Samsung is v. interesting for LCD owners and prospective owners.

I don't know technically how they achieve a HD CRT. I assume there have been problems with doing it before or everyone would have done it. If they've pulled it off I will be amazed. There are TWO obvious advantages. 1. The price! £350 for 32" (and even less for the 27"). Gosh. 2. Gamers heaven! No motion blur with a CRT but all the joy of HD. I am assuming that 1080i would be the one to go for since CRT is interlaced by nature.

Time will tell...

Their non-HDReady slimfit CRT's have had bad reviews. The slimness seems to cause big geometry problems which was certainly the case with one I saw in a shop. Although it was slim for a CRT it was still quite deep, and wide because of the positioning of the speakers. In short slimfit promised CRT quality in a small space but IMO delivered neither. Lets just hope the HDReady version is better.

Yup, hopefully second generation they will have fixed the problems.

By the way, what does it mean when a tv has geometery problems? sorry for dumb question!

A screen with perfect geometry is said to be perfectly aligned, ie, horizontal and vertical axis are straight and true. Because CRT are effected by the earths natural magnetic field, especially the bigger they are, this can have an adverse effect causing geometry distortion.

Without any great difficulty, I'm typing this using a client's old Dell 17inch CRT monitor that will happily display up to 1600*1200 i.e. more than required for HD compliance.

A component to VGA adaptor and an HDMI socket and you could put an HD ready sticker on it.

Rubbish picture mind.

Looks fantastic. Does anybody know what the differences between the two are?

P.S.: maybe it is time to move this thread into the CRT section after all

MOD EDIT:Put a link to the pictures instead of having them displayed here hogging the bandwidth.

There seems to be alot of confusion regarding the size and model no's of these TV's. 27" or 29"/ 30" or 32"? I've seen about four different model numbers too. We'll have to go to Samsung UK for the actual specs/release date/price. Does look nice though doesn't it? Whatever it is...

It was a Samsung slimfit model that made me switch to LCD and I haven't looked back since. The geometry problems were terrible. Enough to make the TV unwatchable.

This sounds great and is perfect for me as I don't think I can afford over £600 for an LCD!

Like Bigtim said, I've been using "HD" CRT monitors on my computer since the mid 90s.

Damn this does sound good, but May! come one I am forever waiting and I can't take it no more, the current 14inch fishbowl is doing me head in. Its too late anyway I'm kinda sold on lcd and can accept its minor faults. Be careful with this slimfit though I bought one last year which was returned due to buzzing, but when I bought it I thought hmmm this should be easier to get up the stairs into my room. Was it hell my mate nearly broke his back we all heard it crack lol. I kept telling my friends at least its not a proper 32 crt and it would be worse if it was'nt as slim. Turns out that slimfit weighed around the average weight for a 32crt at over 50 kilos, lol.

sets sold in large countries have user adjustable geometry, UK ones with bad geometry are just poorly adjusted at the factory surely? fixable at the service menu?

There is a limit to the extent that poor geometry can be corrected. To take a crude example, if you have a control that corrects pincushion/barrel distortion, what do you set it to if you're getting pincushion distortion in the middle of the screen and barrel distortion towards the edges?

I must say, I would love a decent 32" CRT HDTV, I would pay £800 for such a product, as long as it was perfect in every way; perfect geometry, no colour stains, etc.

Its a pity its a mish mash of silver / black, I would have preferred just a 100% black model.

But if this is either 720P or 1080i or p, and if it gets a decent write up, then I may consider a purchase to replace my aging 24" Sony from 1997.

HD CRT TV has been available in the states for some time and the Australian version of the Panny 32PD50 is also Hi-Def so it's quite possible.
The only reason it hasn't arrived on our shores is because manufacturers want to concentrate on newer technology.
