National Geographic launches HD service

Form SDO :-

National Geographic Channel has today launched its HD channel.

It can be found on channel 593 of the Sky Guide on boxes with the EPG v4 software.

Looking at the schedule, it is different from the regular 558 channel. It transmits from 0800-0200 daily, carrying HD versions of about six programmes, already available on the regular channel, but at different times.

This HD channel generally has a 4 hour loop of programmes such as Air Crash Investigation, The Mafia and Megastructures.

Tuning to the channel produces the same message as other already available HD channels, "call customer services to receive this channel."

Nice but what's the point with no receivers to pick it up unless it's FTA ?

Very public testing which is an excellent way to generate interest without actually allowing the general public to view the programming.
I imagine an owner of say a PACE 810 will be able to view the programs like they could with the movies the other week unless they have implemented the encryption.

I suspect the EPG allocation and waiting period is over and now the slot is assigned they would normally have placed a channel marker there but are taking advantage of the "buzz" it will create such as this thread

Yep.

However I suspect they will be showing the SKY retailer HD channel and probably won't even be stocking FTA HD receivers unless the BBC really make a splash sooner rather than later.

Yes although like all channels that cover a large range of divers topics they themselves get competion from the more focused channels, in the case of NG a channel like Animal Planet.

Over the last year NG has been my favourite documentary channel (barring their use of movie tie ins which while having some merit doesn't really work that well).

Someone on digitalspy hooked up their new Humax PRD1000 yesterday and can "see" the channels but nothing coming through. Kingofsat.net reports Videoguard encryption already on - whereas the other day is was in the clear. 3 transponders showing for Sky HD.
