PS3 = Blu Ray and Tivo!?

From the latest edition of PSM magazine:-

'Key points include:

* The PS3 will have an online service that surpasses Xbox Live

* PS3 will be your replacement Tivo, yes it will have the capability of being a DVR

* There are many more games being developed in the United States then previously thought

* The PS3 Final Dev kit is faster then expected

* Includes a download service similar to iTunes from which you can download movies, music, etc. (mark my words; it will be called Sony Connect).

* Media Center capabilities will be a step above that of the 360

* The PS3 will serve as a Location Free Player for the Playstation Portable. This means that you will be able to watch DVD's and Blu-ray's as well as downloaded videos inside your PS3 on your PSP remotely via the internet

* the PSP will be able to control thePlaystation 3's DVR functions as well as send files to and from the PS3

* Firmware updates will add new functionality, very similar to the PSP

* Developers are being told to prep for a fall release of the PS3, and it is expected that the online service will launch at the same time'

Yes the PS3 should be great.

I would be wary of anything claiming to replace your TiVo - its functionality is only met by expensive HTPCs and Windows MCE at the moment.

Sony have licensed TiVo technology for the last 8 years, but I doubt it will make it into the PS3 as it would put the price up somewhat.

Would be great to have a TiVo option on the PS3- I would pay £2500 for a Hi-Def UK TiVo (and only £250 for a dumb DVR like Skys upcoming Sky+HD)!

Perhaps there will be two versions of the PS3 - like the PS2 had the 'psx' which was a DVR with a PS2 inside?

Otherwise I'd be very surprised if it could do that. First it wouldn't have the HDD space - it has a slot but for 2.5" drives which are space limited for recording. I doubt they'll put a bluray recorder in there!

The only other way I can think of is if its networked to a server PC with a tuner card in, then it could be used like the xbox 360 to watch live TV, set up recordings etc. Sony are big supporters of DLNA networking, and showed the PSP playing back videos from a home network server (VAIO) and then pushing it onto an ethernet equipped Sony TV

I would take anything written in a PS mag with a pinch of salt. Until Sony makes an official announcement it's merely speculation. Remember all the hype and BS regarding the 'emotion engine'? While I'll probably be getting a PS3, I'll won't be suckered in til I see it in Edge.

lol, remember we were told the PS2 could do graphics like Toy Story in real time :D The capabilities of the PS2 were surpassed before it was even release here- Sony talk the talk, but rarely deliver. I'm not saying the PS2 isn't great, just not as great as Sony would have us believe!
