That really depends on what equipment you have. If you've got a DTS 6.1 surround speaker setup and a DVD player/recorder with progressive component outputs, then you can probably get a lot of mileage out of them.
If you've only got an ultra-cheap DVD player that just has SCART or Composite and Stereo audio output, then you'll be wanting an upgrade to make the most of your funky new TV.
There are upscaling DVD players which will make the most of HDTVs, but the 576p component output ones should still look pretty crisp on an HDTV - and are possibly a better bet, saving the rest of the money to put towards a proper High Definition player like Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.
For a/v switching devices, you may need to look at getting new kit, since SCART is no use with HD, and the media companies are trying to stop Component being used, so you'll be looking at HDMI or DVI switch boxes. That said, many HDTVs have quite a few inputs, so you can hook up your legacy equipment via SCART, your XBox 360 to component, your Blu-Ray player to HDMI/DVI-HDCP, your PC up to VGA/D-Sub, etc... which may reduce your need for a switch box.

Most people are in for a shock if they want the full HD experience.

First off every piece of HD equipment you buy needs to be HDCP compliant. (monitor, player, reciever)

HDCP is an encryption method used to stop people making perfect digital copies.

So you need a HD Ready TV £1000+, PS3 or stand alone player £300+, AV reciever £1000+.

Once you have all three connected via HDMI you'll be ready for some serious HD action.
