TV`s labeled as HD but with 1024x1024 res

Hi,

Im may be missing the point.. however I have read a few documents on which a TV can be branded a True HD tv and is allowed to carry the HD ready logo...

One of the requirements is a resolution of

1280x720
or
1920x1080...

However on some of the more popular electronic retailers sites they list HD ready tv`s with a resolution of 1024x1024....... Am i missing something?

From the EICTA licence agreement:

Quote:
The minimum native resolution of the display (e.g. LCD, PDP) or display engine (e.g. DLP) is 720 physical lines in wide aspect ratio.
A minimum horizontal resolution is not specified so 42" plasmas with a resolution of 1024 x 768 can qualify as HD Ready.

The 1024 x 1024i plasmas are actually a bit of an anomaly in that they are interlaced displays. The rest are all progressive.

but it also states that it has to be wide screen ( aspect ration of 16:9 ) so if it has 720 (:9 ) part horizontal lines, then to keep the aspect ratio of 16:9 it must have 1280 columns = 1280x720, so the 1024 cannot keep the 16:9 ratio? thus the 1024x1024 dont fit HD compliancy...

720/9 =80 * 16 = 1280

It's never claimed to be a quality standard.

Without the HD Ready spec I can guarantee there would have been far more people buying displays in the last year that would not even be close to what we consider upto the job of supporting nationally agreed HD broadcast standards.

While there is no doubt the HD Ready spec could have been tighter there are and always will be economic and political considerations, the spec was after all created by the manufacturers.

I think its made the manufacturers concentrate on building displays that are useful rather than build displays that meet a minimum standard that would suit the marketing jargon.
