Another HD Launch Rumour Thread

Well, as everyone else has had a go, I thought that I would pass on my story to you.

I had a Sky engineer visit today installing a new Sky + 160 box as we have recommended a friend. I asked him about the HD launch, as you do, & this is what he said:

Launch date 1st March - very confident about this
Cost of box £600 for Sky digital customers, but less for those with Sky+ boxes, and less again for those with Sky+160 boxes - but he did not know how much the discounts would be. He also did not know about any additional subscription.

Make of that what you will, but the fact that he did not have an answer to all my questions, might just make the answers he did give me more reliable?!

Sky Call Centre

I chatted to one of the lassies in the Call Centre 2 days ago. She said that they had no briefing on the topic and have not even seen any demos or seen the hardware which they usually do prior to a launch

I was talking to the reincarnation of Elvis in the chippy last night.

He says it will be £1000 for the box + a kidney. It will also be £25 a month extra to watch Sky Sports HD if a football team are playing on a Wednesday when there is an "A" in the month.

I can't believe how many threads we have on this now. It has to be crying out for a sticky - mods

I'm guessing we'll know when Sky announce something. Til then I'm sure no-one bar Murdoch and a few of his nearest and dearest know for sure when it will be and how much it will be.

Someone told me that Sky will give away the first 1000 HD boxes on March 15th to those who call a premium rate number from 9am to 12am that day

Might as well be 'bloke in pub' - this is so tedious - why do these people waste time with ill informed nonsense

I hope your other 15 posts were at least intentionally funny

Well I asked an old lady at the corner of a street and she said she'd never heard of it.

Looks like it's all a myth; no HD telly after all

Thanks for reporting this in all good faith, but frankly I don't believe that it is in any way reliable.

With 1st March less than a month away, I really can't believe that Sky wouldn't have stepped up the advertising machine a peg or two by now.

Although there MIGHT be some shred of truth about concessionary price for Sky+ owners over normal subscribers, why would those with 160's get a further discount - maybe it had something to do with the fact that he'd just put a 160 box in your house?

Sorry, but as others and I have mentioned before, there is no point in asking the "person" who does your Sky installation about this sort of thing - they know nothing about it and are just guessing like the rest of us.

I wouldn't be at all surpirsed to find that Sky announce it officially to the public before or at the same time as telling their employees.

Get in the queue bud

Seriously. I dug my receipt out last night out of interest - 23/8/05 my interest was registered.

If it resembles the XBOX360 palaver with pre orders I should have HD by 23/8/06!

As for my other 15 posts, I don't believe any were funny (intentionally or not), and I know that one person found my information on a Tosh lcd tv very helpful, as they had the decency to say so.

Not a grouch, no.

But really, notwithstanding what you were told, even on the most simply objective analysis of what some ill-informed fitter apparently 'told' you , you should, or indeed anyone with one iota of common sense should, have realised that such blatant rubbish is not worthy of repetition...

That's all i'm saying really.

I think you are being unfair. This fella has been told some info(inaccurate or not)and is passing it on.
At least it is something to read while we wait for some solid information.

Its interesting that when people post rumours saying the box will be £199 with a £5 or £10 sub people are happy to listen but as soon as some posts something suggesting £600 people are ready to have a go. Ok so it may not be spot on but who knows. The comments regarding Sky+ owners getting a discount sounds possible to me.

Not unfair - this is clearly ill-informed or mendacious rubbish - and the pointlessness of the speculation is indeed tiresome - all im suggesting is that this nonsense just wastes everyones time - not an unreasonable proposition.

I have no difficulty with people positing what they think might be the situation; it's when it is dressed up as supposed insider information in an attempt to add the vestiges of credence that I find it so wearingly tiresome.

But hey, only my opinion

Ho hum. Many of my friends working at Sky have no idea when HD will launch, and they're working on or transferring HD content.

Still - bet that installer has it spot on. It only took 4 visits for them to run a cable properly around my house, so I guess they probably do have an ear to the inner machinations of the Sky board.

OK - it's a pointless rumour, but there's no point flaming the guy who reported what the installer said. One of these stories has to be true. Eventually.

Well I used to be a copper see,and so I thought I'd ask this bloke I knew, always useful for the odd bit of info ya know.
So anyway the Pub was pretty noisy...and I gave him the nod,and said listen, have you heard anything about when Sky HD is coming out.

He thought for a minute..looked around a bit shifty like, tapped his nose and said almost without thinking.OCTOBER!

A bit surprised I said... High Definition on SKY TV is coming out in October!

He looked at me a bit puzzled ,sorry, I thought you said when is "Scotch"
Eddie coming out.

I think that what might happen is

* SkyHD is released on April the 27th at 16.27, there will ne no prior warning;

* The first channel to go live will be the completely unexpected "Nickleodeon Jnr HD", closely followed by the equally as unexpected "Playhouse Disney HD";

* Installation can only be arranged by - firstly collecting any 7 consecutive copies of "The Sun" (April 10-19 2006 issues only), and secondly by presenting page 24 of all 7 copies - between 13.11 and 16.24 on the 28th April - at any outlet of "Martin Dawes", in Glasgow.

Just to add some 'vestige of credence' to my 'posit', the above facts were given to me by the plumber who installed my bathroom yesterday. Apparently his brother-in-law has one of those plasma screens in his shed, and for the last week the screen has been sending subliminal messages to him via both video and 5.1 audio....and his brother-in-law's name is Harry Duggan......spooky!!!. I hope this was not too 'wearingly tiresome' for you

No it is not at all - and thank you for making the point through the medium of comedy.

You have shown up the capricious nature of the first post with the gift of laughter, and made your point well. It's a pity that those that try to dress up ridiculous rubbish as truth do not appreciate same.

As for Sky HD, it will start on 2nd April - God told me in a dream....
