Minimum for a good HD TV ?

I was in Comet earlier and all the HD ready tv's has the comet HD promo running. All of the TV's looked ok but not great apart from the Pioneer costing £2800 which was very comparable to a display I saw in Melbourne in 2004. Not sure if it was LCD or plama but it was the best yet I've seen. Surely you don't need to spend anywhere near this though for an HQ display ? If I do buy one it would have to be a max of about £1500 as I am not minted like most on here
