Linearity or Magnetism?

So far I've tried four Widescreen CRT sets. The first three were Hitachi - all three were sent back because of various issues. What I did notice was that on all three sets the picture showed things kind of warped on the right hand side of the screen. The picture seemed stretched on the right 1/3 of the screen. It particularly showed with text scrolling across the screen or when the picture was panning across. I kind of thought this might be a problem with that model.

I now have a Sony set which I'm pleased with. I do however have a similar problem again with things slighly stretched on the right of the screen and also stretched more on part of the left side of the screen. Things seem to distort in sort of waves as they move across the screen. I then began to assume this might be a Magnetism problem in the room because four sets had now displayed a similar type of distortion.

However, I've just been reading about Linearity issues on sets and it seems that might be the problem. What do people think? Is this a Linearity or Magnetism problem? Or something else? If it is Linearity then it seems all four sets I've had may have had Linearity problems. Is it usually this common? Finally, can it be fixed?

Thanks in advance,
Matt .

Try watching a DVD, is that the same.
Can you see the fault all the time, post a picture?

I agree that more equipment details and some pix would help.
Does it happen with all sources ?
(including DVD and VCR).
Magnetism usually gives colour purity errors - blotches of magenta being the commonest manifestation.

Hi - thanks for your replies.

My set is a Sony KV28HX15U. To be honest I'm pretty happy with the set. The problem mentioned is nowhere near as bad as some linearity issues I've seen posted here and it's not really enough to make me want to return the TV. I just wondered what was causing it and if it could be corrected. I don't think it's geometry. In fact the geometry on the set is good. Lines and edges seem pretty straight on the whole screen.

The digital signal is coming via a Satellite Digibox. RGB signal through a Scart cable. The distortion is also there when watching a DVD. It's not noticeable most of the time so is not too big an issue. You don't really notice it unless things are scrolling across the screen so a picture probably wouldn't show it. I have only noticed very very slight magenta / pink tinges on the sides of the screen which only show on white - these patches are only very very faint and are not noticeable most of the time. In fact they're only very faint even on white. Again this doesn't really bother me as it's so faint and only then on a bright white picture.

As I say, I'm happy with the set. It seems a good TV to me. I've been pleased with the picture quality, colours, geometry and sound. I just wondered if the slight distortion is a common thing and if it can be adjusted at all.

Thanks again,
Matt .

The distortion is very common. It's because the geometry of the picture is a compromise to get the convergence in the corners right. However some picture tube makers are better then others...
The bad news is that there is not much variation between tubes of a given design - normally the variation is seen as convergence errors.

I have a Sony 32DC11 which I think is a digital version of the HX15. It exhibits a similar problem, ie, with horizontally scrolling text or a slow pan the image seems to stretch then squeeze then stretch again.

However, the good news is that it only seems to happen when the picture is in smart mode. In wide, zoom, 14:9, and 4:3 it pretty much disappears. Consequently I thought it was an artifact of the 'smart' processing.

Other than that it's a great picture and I'm very happy with it.
