Unhappy Toshiba ZP38 doesn't switch on

I have a 36in ZP38 picture frame, about 20 monhts old so outside warranty. Around Oct 05 it wouldn't switch on.

I always turn the set off onto the standby power overnight then switch it back on next day then start the set up by turning on with remote. One day all it did was make a couple of sad little clicking switch noises but no pitcure or sound. The speakers made a small noise so power was getting through so I assumed switch was faulty somehow and called out a local engineer. When he arrived same thing happened, he brushed his hand accross the screen and caused a big static crackle and the picture magically appeared.

Imagine how stupid I felt - looked like the whole thing was just static build up. After that I rubbed my hand accross screen once a week or so to keep static down.

Now it's happened again, no pic, no sound just clicking noises, but this time no static on the screen at all. I suspect tit may have been just a coincidence when eng did it last time?

Anyone got any idea what the problem is and how to rectify it please?

Is it a problem with the switch or any other part and if so do I need to call eng again? I don't want to get ripped off and have a new switch fitted only for the same thing to happen again...

For various reasons (including safety) that's a bad idea...you should always switch it off at the mains switch overnight...and most firemen will tell you to unplug it at the wall socket. (I don't do this myself)

It wasn't static build-up causing it, the engineer was just testing for the presence of "EHT" (the extremely high voltage which illuminates the screen) by brushing the back of his hand across the screen...if it's present the hairs on the back of your hand stand) and it was merely coincidence the raster appeared...nothing to do with static build-up and your wasting your time doing that

It won't be the switch, the set is "tripping" due to a fault which can be almost anywhere...a very common cause of this is dry joints on the Teletext sub-panel...which is not a job for an in-experienced person to attempt...suggest you call in the engineer again.

Thanks for the replies.

Engineer came round today, took the teletext circuit board out & it worked! Replaced the back on the TV and it didn't again! He couldnt find any obvious dry joints so TV now gone to the workshop for proper testing and I'll let you know what was wrong when they find out!

Hi Purpleplectrum, I know this was four years ago now but can you recall what the problem was? I have the same problem and your post is the only reference to it i have come across.

JayCee - Do you have any further knowledge of the problem?
