Toshiba 32YT56 Sound Issue

I received my new 32YT56 on Sun. Setup fine, then noticed a high-pitched background noise when viewing any channel, DVD or Video tape. Removed everything so it was just the TV connected to the aerial cable and nothing else attached, but the sound was still there.

I'm trying to find out if this is a feature or whether I do have a fault with my set. I was wondering if anyone with this set could do a quick sound test. Select any channel, turn the sound right down to the minimum and listen to one of the speakers, then press mute and un-mute. Is there high-pitched background noise when not muted? Any help with this would be appreciated as if I have to return this set I don't really want another with the same 'feature'. Thanks in advance

No problem with the sound . I can't see that this should happen , seems that you have a fault with your tv.

Cool Tosh - Hum

Just bought 28" version. Very similar. Same geometry irregularities as the 32" but nothing's perfect. And overall, I am quite impressed. .... However, I'm about to send mine back because of the hum. Same as you, everything disconnected and left with a hum - even on an Ext channel to which nothing at all is connected.

You've got me worried. I was going to ask for a replacement ... but is this fault ubiquitous?

Can anyone else report on their YT56s?

Interesting bs9292, I think I may ask for an alternative instead of a replacement. Also had the sound cut-out altogether today, had to power off/on set to get it back (another thread highlighted this issue). Oh well, I originally looked at the SONY KD32DC11, but ruled it out on price. £80 more for hopefully less hassle, choice made.

TV set needs parts ordered to repair the 'hum', lol. Rejected the set as its only 4 days old, Sony replacement now on order. Anyone who has got a 32YT56 (and maybe the 28" version) with the hum problem, it looks like they have a fix/part available. I don't really want the hassle of another set with the same 'feature'. It's a shame that the style and picture (including freeview) were fine.

Just hope I get a good one from Sony

I had a similar sound issue with a toshiba tv, and it turned out to be a wrongly fitted capacitor in the power supply unit which led to a high pitched sound when the tv was on through all inputs, its a few years back dont think it was to expensive to repair though.

Hi folks. This very problem has been annoying me since I first got the tv. 30/12/05.
I can't even bear to watch it now as the noise drives me insane.
Engineer is coming out on Saturday 7 Jan 06 to check it out.
Will let you know the result.

So it does seem to be a feature. Glad I didn't request a replacement and went for the Sony. It cost an additional £50 over the Tosh, but the picture and sound (no whistle!) are superior in my opinion. I bet they mention the fact that parts need to be ordered for your set botty

My set lost all sound (all AV sources) and needed to be switched off/on to get it back. I think there was another post regarding that issue also.

Comet engineer came out today to check my "humming" problem. Said it was definately a fault and told me to take it back for a new one or get another
type. Trouble is none of the stores near me have any in stock and unable to give me a date when they will have any more. Looks like I'll be getting a different type then. Shame though because I love everything else about it.

Any news on the sony ajvj1812?

Got the set on the 2nd Jan and I'm very pleased. In my opinion the picture and especially the sound are superior to the Tosh. There is not much between the picture quality on the in-built freeview and a RGB sky feed The only thing it lacks is a four pin S-Video connection, but this is sorted with using a fully wired scart cable.

Overall the whole family find the Sony a better addition to the living room over the Tosh.

I've had Curry's engineer in to look at my 28". He tried telling me that the hiss/hum (it's not a high-pitched noise) is typical amplifier noise. He said the noise goes when mute is turned on because the mute on the Toshiba has the effect of turning off the amplifier.

I must say I remain doubtful. It just seems too loud to be acceptable.

Ajvj1812 - you mentioned that there was a part/repair to deal with the problem. Have you spoken to Toshiba? Do they recognise the problem?

Thanks.

That's what the Comet repair service told me, without the engineer even turning up. They denied it was a known fault, but I then made the point that if it wasn't a known fault how the hell did they know a part was required I then stated I wasn't prepared to have a brand new set repaired and I wanted to replace it with another make/model. Don't know how, but I had a feeling it was a feature with the YT56 series (or a batch of these sets).

It's funny that I had exactly the same problem with a set I bought in 1998 (Tosh 32" Widescreen again). They had a mod/repair kit to fix a hum problem then, in the end they replaced the set after 6 months.

I'd reject the set if you're not happy with it. Even if the noise on your set is half as bad as it was on mine, you must be going out of your mind with it, I was

there is a slight whistle on these sets which is just the amplifier but there are some sets that there is a more distinct higher pitch whistle.i have informed toshiba technical of this fault and they will be looking into it.there is no mod that i am aware of at the moment

Hi mctech, I have a new Tosh 32yt56 delivered at xmas, I have got the problem on analogue where the Stereo will not come in, also in Analogue mode get intermittant crackling from the speakers, fine in Digi mode, once the sound disappeared altogether, had to switch off set to clear fault, also got hum from rear of set, scan coils or similar I suppose, the engineer tried to blame our aerial saying the Stereo decoder was switcing in and out, when asked why my previous Toshiba did not have the same problem , he agreed to swap, having new set delivered next week from currys, try one more then swap if no good, shame really as the set looks are great as is the digital picture.......

I have a 32YT56 - sound is fine but if i turn the sound up above 'normal tv level' - e.g. i want to watch a film there is a rattling from the speaker - like it's not fitted properly. Annoying but i have had so many problems with tv's recently i am just living with it. Also - geometry issue whereby picture bends down at top left of screen a little - not too bad.
Overall I am very happy with the picture (after adjusting stupid default colour, brightness, contrast settings down of course!)

Got my 32YT56 on Boxing day and the high pitched tone irritated me right from the start! Comet said they would replace it but have run out their stocks during the sales. Hopefully the new stock will be without the tone!
Although, 2 months on.........think I'll just get my money back. The digital tuner isn't that good anyway, every time I switch on it goes to the History channel.

I had 2 goes with this toshiba, 32" version, eventually had enough and obtained refund from currys, went out and bought a Sony KD-32DC11U best thing i ever did, after many years buying Toshiba,s this model did enough to put me off them forever, maybe it is something to do with them being made in Turkey and badged as Toshiba's.

I feel the same bryfly. I'm going to opt for the Sony KV28HX15U or the Phillips 28PW6520. Anyone that has any opinions on these I'll gladly hear!

Mine came with one shelf, but you are right it is confusing, best to check with the supplier, i phoned the help line of the stand manufacturer and he confirmed they make 2 stands one with one shelf and one with two, if you go to the Sony site they seem confused as well, the KD32DC11TNS.U shows two and the KD32DC11D98TN.YG shows one.

While I have read this about the cheaper Toshiba model (44?), I would not expect Toshiba to do this with an award winning model like the 56. Anyone with a 56 to confirm? Does is say "Made in Europe" at the back?
