Black & White Picture

My (somewhat elderly) Sony Trinitron TV has suddenly decided that it will only display TV and video in B & W. Teletext/Ceefax and all on screen info is still colour. Does anyone have any suggestions (other than get a new one) please?

Is your signal feed to the TV through a scart lead into an AV socket or through a 'normal' aerial type lead ?

If through a scart just check that the signal mode setting on the TV is correct, you can normally 'joggle' between 2 settings.

I've just had a similar problem with my DVD input, I must have changed a setting by accident at some point.

Smile Had same problems recently

Yeah I have the same problem recently, I was watching Sin City and it kept going black and white but I was getting patches of colour here and there, damned annoying but it cleared up quite quickly....

It's a KV-M1421U portable. It's about 15 years old, so owes me nothing, but it's been a good telly and still has a very good picture, just not colour. All the other colour features (text, on screen control settings etc) are still colour. It's as if the picture has been switched to B + W, but I can't find anything on either the set or the remote to switch it back.

This is usually caused by a dirty ceramic trimmer capacitor.
If you are comfortable with removing the back and withdrawing the circuit board I will PM you how to cure it easily using a can of switch-cleaner available from Maplins or a similar shop.
Report back.

Thanks a million, JayCee. I did it myself; it was really straightforward (once I'd found the component) and worked a treat. Brilliant!!!
Thanks again
