Progressive setting=better picture?

Hi im usually quite good with this sort of thing but im baffled by the progressive setting on my toshiba 32zp48. Ive calibrated the picture via the Digital video essentials DVD but last week i turned it onto the progressive setting and immediatly sky digital picture improved becoming less blocky and sharper. Is this setting DVD related? My DVD player isnt progressive scan so would it matter?

I have just bought one of these tv's and I cannot decide which is the best setting.
I read your post and tried progressive and it does look good on some things but there is a little flicker but the picture looks clearer.
What is your picture like through sky.I cannot get mine right,I have tried everything,it does not look bad but it looks a little fuzzy as if there is a poor signal,but the signal was perfect on my old tv.I have sky set to rgb and toned alll the settings down I have got a good scart cable but watching sport especially is not as good as I thought.
I will leave it on Progressive for a while and see what I think.

Hi, this seems to be a huge problem with sky looking bad, ive posted and read threads on this subject, people i work with who own it have the same problem and each time its identical (picture was fine on my old tv etc)
The answer is simple and makes sense-
Consumers are interested in quantity rather than quality (100's of babestation channels anyone!) and will pack as much in as they can at a big cost to quality.
Picture is generally better on a new tv, any flaws in the broadcast will be nice and clear for you to see. Try channel 4 (good picture) and then switch to a nice low budget channel like Majestic tv etc and you'll see a big difference. Its not the tv's fault. As ive stated, i set the picture up using the DVE DVD and on a good broadcast channel the picture is stunning, heres my settings but after seeing this done before and a huge difference in settings i think its down to the individual tv. This was calibrated after 1 week of ownership (new tube etc)
contrast = 72
bright = 56
colour = 46
tint = +16
sharpness = -30
colour temp = normal
black stretch = off
DNR = off
Scan mode = natural/progressive
Give that a go, see what happens!

Thanks I will try that,if I could just get it right for sport I would be very happy.It is a bit fuzzy on football,and I cannot find a setting that gets rid of this,it must be the reception.
Thanks for helping me.

Progressive scan de-interlaces all interlaced inputs and displays it as progressive, the same as a plasma/LCD. It makes the pic smoother and rock steady, absolutely amazing to my eyes

Its down to sky using low bit rate encryption on its channels, to cram all the channels into limeted bandwidth. If a DVD is encoded badly it looks bad, same for digital TV, crap in crap out.

theres the good and the bad with these sort of sets. They upscale everthing. So dvds will look most of the time amazing but poor sources with low bit rates will look like sh***T. At least the jvc has this system. I suppose the toshiba is the same. On Satelitte when the source is good and that isnt often then the picture will be almost dvd like. Even standard analogue can look good if the signal is good.

Thats why alot of people are dissappointed with their new high resolution sets sometimes.

ps. the tube inside my jvc set is toshiba

As you say evans when the picture is good it can look amazing, after the initial shock of the same old sky quality problem that everyones had it looks far better than ive ever seen. (Not sure if im just ignoring the problem anymore!) I think the key to it has been to turn the sharpness down to such an extent that the blocking effect 'merges' without the picture being too soft.
I'll be sticking with progressive for decent broadcasting, thanks for the advice sbowler about crap in crap out, i'll be adjusting the setting if the channel is poor quality.

you could mess around with the settings mine has super digipure which is basically the sharpness setting on the jvc and another called digital vnr which is some kind of noise reduction on the picture.

I actually opened mine from the back and calibrated the set using the horizontal and vertical knobs of the set. It has improved the focusing of the set and viewing pleasure as from the factory they come not so perfect. But dont recommend to do it as it is rather risky!!

Mr Evans is a brave man

I use progressive for everything. It looks brilliant. If you got it, use it.

Sky is over priced crap. Plus its owned by an T*sser. If people are happy to part with £50 a month for crappy pictures, why moan about it?

I think Picture Mode 3 turns off digital processing. From there you can adjust the other picture settings. The M Mode then becomes the new settings.

Well in a way i was foolish because when i did it the tv switched off!!! that really scared me, i think there is some system with the power to protect it. Luckily it turned on again and i managed to calibrate!! Thants why i dont recomend to do it. Plus on mine there is about 20 screws to take off!!!

Advantages of progressive scan include:

Subjectively increased vertical resolution. The perceived vertical resolution of an interlaced image is usually equivalent to multiplying the active lines by about 0.6. This explains, for example, why HDTV standards such as 1080i (1920x1080, interlaced) in most cases deliver a quality equal to or slighty poorer than that of 720p (1280x720, progressive), despite containing far more lines of resolution.
No flickering of narrow horizontal patterns
Simpler video processing equipment
Easier compression

Note: to get the best possible picture , on dvd for instance you may have to change your players setting from auto ,video or film to suit the source dvd material
