Squeezed picture on Bush TV

Last night the picture on my Bush 6690, which is a widescreen & digital 28" CRT about 5.5 years old, compressed into about half the screen. Ie my “widescreen” TV is now very narrow screen.

I seem to recall this happened a while back and it was fixed under guarantee so I do not know what the problem was nor the cost.

Does anyone know what the problem may be and likely cost of repair?

Obviously, at over 5 years old I need to consider whether it is worth fixing it even though it is reasonably well specced.

ive known this to be a common problem on that paticular brand and widescreen, i think you may have bad caps inside the chassis or worst it cud be the flyback transformer get it checked out

errrr thanks! Could I trouble you for a translation for non techies.

Is either of those serious cost wise?

This is a common fault on the Turkish-made chassis fitted to this model and is usually caused by a faulty capacitor in the "East/West" circuit.
There are usually 2 or 3 components needing replaced. The line output (or "flyback") transformer won't be faulty.
Any decent engineer will know the symptoms/cure for this fault but due to different labour charges around the country it's hard to give an exact repair cost...should fall around £45-£70 I would think.

Thanks JayCee.

I discovered last night that the analogue tuner was not working at all - lots of wavy lines.

I shall try to get an engineer in.

Engineer came yesterday - £60 call out charge incl all labour - and "fixed" it with a £10 parts bill.

However, when I got home the picture was now approx twice the width of the screen so now I'm worse off as, at least, before I could see all the picture.

He is due back again on Saturday.

I'm hoping it's just a matter of an adjutment like you used to get in the old days

I doubt it very much.
It sounds as though coil L604 or the east/west FET transistor is faulty...they are the usual cause of excessive width.

Is this likely to have been part of the original fault or something new? I noticed last night that the picture was also distorted - side edges curving inwards.

Is this an expensive part?

Much appreciate the advice.

This would have been part of the original fault which is caused by a dry joint on a particular capacitor.

No, should be under a tenner.

Engineer came, swapped a couple of components which appeared to be a transistor (longish rectangualar black body with three wires) plus a resistor no difference and much scratching of head.

Has to come back again with a "coil" component which needs ordering so I guess its the L604 coil mentioned above.

Good job I borrowed the office 32" plasma over Xmas.

It is indeed L604.
This is the most common fault an engineer will come across on that particular chassis and it all starts with a dry joint on a capacitor...which sometimes survives but it is always good practice to replace it.
The arcing at its leg (where the dry joint was) can lead to internal heating which damages it and although at first glance it appears okay and will measure okay on a meter can sometimes break down "under load" (when the set is operating).
This damaged capacitor also overheats a resistor and sometimes the East/West FET ("Field Effect Transistor)..."that longish rectangualar black body with three wires", but more usually the coil L604 developes shorted turns with the effect of excessive width.
