Hi everyone,

I have seen many people are praising the Tosh. TV in this model on the 32" and the 36" and I have been down to my local stores and seen this model at 5 stores and the picture always looks dark and grainy. The set is the perfect size for the living room and has everything we need - ie , 5.1 sound....etc.

Users of this set - is it dark and grainy? because compared to other sets its looks bad.

They probably have factory settings,which look awful.When i first got the set the default settings looked like crap.
I can assure you that the pq is exellent,i have the 32",and even sky looks good.DVD through component is awesome.

What about the sound? we have a small lounge / dining room and cant have it amazingly loud. But is the 5.1 sound good?...depth of sound good etc?

The sound is actually very good,i was suprised at how good it was.I use my own home cinema surround setup but i tried out the sets speakers and was pleasently suprised.Even the built in front speakers alone are impressive for the size.

There is only 1 minor gripe i have with my set,and that is that the sides of the screen are very slightly 'bowed' towards the middle of the screen,like this:

Obviously not as prominant.Now i have the 32" and apparently the 36" comes with menu options to change the geometry,but the 32" does not.When viewing widescreen i cant notice it at all,its only in other formats i notice it but its very slight and not worth fussing over.

If you get the set i can let you know what settings i use.. i calibrated it myself using a calibrating dvd.It looks very nice now.

I use it for xbox (480p) looks awesome.

DVD progressive scan. (again...brilliant pq)

Sky Digital. (a very good picture when settings are tweaked)

The set is damn heavy though i must warn you!! Make sure there are 2 adults at hand when you set it up.

The stand is exellent too.Overall i am very happy and im sure you will be.

The set certainly produces richer more rosey colours than what would be considered normal. This is in part to a warm tint that appears to prevail on the set.

I noticed exactly the same sort of dark scenes when viewing in stores myself.
One in particular looked dull and over powered skin colours. However I have not noticed the grainy effect you talk about. In complete contrary to this I've found the set rather polished and oozing in a great liquidy black level (if you get my meaning?).

I would certainly go back in store and play around with the controls to see if you can achieve the sort of picture you are after. The remote is not important as everything can be done from underneath the front flap.

Of course the picture will never be anywhere near perfect using a *production* line source. Perhaps take a DVD along and try and get a dem.

The sound eminating from the speakers is streets ahead of most TV's. I would say perhaps 2nd in line to a Loewe. Very rich and sweet sounding with excellent treble detail. The external speakers are cheap plastic affairs so I would not expect anything great from them but unable to truly comment here.

Hi, I wonder if you were looking at an analogue source of pictures (off air ?) Make sure you try the TV with it fed with a digitally sourced picture - such as from a Freeview box. Regards, yt.

I agree with personyfied. The colours are a little over rich (for some tastes) but you can screw down the colour.
There appears sometimes to be a brown tint to the colours though it does only affect it on those brown hues being displayed. It doesnt notice on blues greens, like cartoons for example. Its not awful.

There are a couple of picture processing modes and a few options for the users choice plus the default Tosh settings are way to contrasty, Set Contrast to around 60, Brightness 58, Colour 50 to see the benefits. Try those.
Analogue signal is not the tv`s best asset. Digibox will provide better pictures. Some stores daisy chain the equipment, thats not going to give a great demonstration

As for sound. Its ideal for a small living room. The sound in 5.1 mode DVDs is good. It wont match a decent £500 AV equipment of course but as I say it rocks my living room! The built in subwoofer is just about right. The speaker volumes are independant adjustable and you can even set the front/rear delay time. The built in hardware does a good job at Dolby Surround from normal tv. The dolby is inbuilt to the nicam broadcasts apparently. ie. 4 channels.

The 32 inch does provide geometry adjustments for the picture.
Mute on the remote and Menu on the TV accesses the Geometry setup. Only the 36 inch differs as it offers Tilt adjustment for correcting tilted rectangle due to the magnetic field of the earth.

Also, if you're too close to the TV it will often appear quite grainy regardless of settings.

So when viewing the TV in the shop, stand back from it as far as you would be when sat in your living room. The image looks a lot better when viewed from the right sort of distance.

At least that holds for how I have mine set up and people often comment on how good the picture looks when they're watching, especially DVD's via component

Hi guys,
Another 32ZP48p owner here !! Just to reiterate whats been said already, once adjusted to a more realistic level, the PQ is great.
Contrast, brightness, colour etc etc are set WAAAAY TOO HIGH from the factory, take the time to calibrate it and the difference is like night and day.
DVD PQ using prog-scan IMHO is faultless, freeview thru RGB is better that terrestrial off air broadcasts.
All in all, I am more than happy with it. I dont have the supplied speakers connected up (see sig below as to why), but needless to say the sound from its in-built speakers / subwoofer in stereo is about the best I've heard from a TV. The supplied satellite speakers are a bit "plasticky", but give a decent enough spread of as sound I found upon a quick test of the TV upon its arrival at the Jones' residence. You can always upgrade the 4 sat's if you find they aren't enough for your needs easily enough with some small bookshelf speakers. I used a pair of THESE on the front channels and found them a lot better so I suppose 2 pairs used for fronts and rears should be a cheap alternative for an upgrade ??

As has been said, geometry is a bit of a problem, but using the details found HERE you can iron out most (if any) probs you have. (dont worry about the model No's shown, it does work on the ZP48's). Just take the time to take down ALL the origonal settings first. Also, when in the service menu (accessed by pressing MUTE on the remote once, then press and hold MUTE on the remote and MENU on the TV's control panel under the front flap at the same time), if you press the AV input button on the remote you can scroll thru a red, green and blue screen to a white and black grid that can be used to make adjustments to the geometry if required.
