Is High Definition and Progressive Scan the same thing?

As the title, are they the same? If so, then I presume many CRT's are HD, not just Plasma's and LCD's?

no. standard tv is interlaced, i.e. the odd lines are scanned in one pass and then the even lines are scanned in the next pass. Progressive scan is when all the lines are scanned sequentially, all in one pass.

High definition is the amount of lines. 576 lines for standard pal (dvds), interlaced. this is labelled as 576i. There is a progressive version of this (well deinterlaced), 576p.

NTSC is 480 lines, so 480i or 480p

High definition comes in two flavours 720 lines progressive (720p) ad 1080 lines interlaced (1080i). Most CRT's in Europe don't have enough lines for this, but some will come.

Thanks chedmaster, also whilst I'm here...I have another thread at the mo asking about new telly recommendations, I'm currently looking at the Toshiba 32ZP48 CRT, is this a good one to go for?

yes, i have the older zd26 and even that is fantastic. however make sure you know you won't be hd ready.

True, but to be honest, at the mo and for the near future I'm not that worried about HD TV, I have heard the 32ZP48 was a good set and with the progressive scan my Xbox would be right at home!

Just as an estimate how much would a HD telly cost at the moment?

around £900 for a LCD or £2k for a plasma truely hd ready. but the lcd's pq is not likely to be as good as tosh tbh, maybe when hd is mainstream but till then...
