recording from Digital TV to Video

Samsung - SV-DVD3E - Please can you help me record from BBC4 onto video. I have checked all connections are correct, input AV1, set the video to record and it appeared to do so, but I was unable to playback and don't know what I am doing wrong. Can someone help please.
