PS the sale of goods act indicates retailers are responsible for 6 years even out of manufacturers guarantee. This explains their repeeted atempts to push extended 5 year warranties. [/FONT]
So how does that work then? Interested to know more about this!

This is part of the Sale Of Goods Act and is often misquoted. It does not mean that everything is guaranteed for six years. If it did, most manufacturers would go bust! It's really designed to protect the consumer from epidemic and design faults. See the factsheet at the DTI's website for a bit more detail:

It gives you certain rights which are valid for up to 6 years in England & Wales.

As usual there is a lot of interpritation required and so will have to see the case law of how judges are ruling on these kinds of cases.

In principle the item should last "a reasonable period" but you would have to factor in what the item is and the price paid for it. If you bought an expensive dining table you would expect it to last at least 6 years so if it colapsed after 5 years then you would have a strong case. If you bought a £30 portable walkman and it broke after 5 years of heavy use they would probably say you were lucky to get 5 years use out of it.
