Image quality CRT rear projection

I now need to conseder a new set but would like a larger screen - 36 inch minimum. Rear proj CRT seem to be reasonably priced, however I have some questions. How good is picture quality? Do you really need to sit much further away to see a decent picture? I want to spend less that £1000 but appreciate good picture quality. ALso how are rear projecteds for brightness? Can sunshine coming into the room interfere grossly with the picture? Shold I just go for a 36 inch widescreen CRT.
