pixelization on Philip's 9305 pixelplus

Now made the stupid mistake of reading a review that said the the Philip's 9305 TV was a 5 star choice, best of the bunch and for the prices seemed good. but now I have one the picture quality is very poor far worse that a cheap television for asda, my old television gave a far better picture. The picture has noise in the background and pixelises, face tones are very pastie and all look like criton from red dwarf. now for some reason Philip's have decided to put a demo button on the remote control to demonstrate the pixel plus feature, but when you try it was is all most no difference in the picture quality, it not something you would want to show off to your Friends, they would just think you have wasted you money, and I'm inclined to agree. I took a look at the television in the show room it appears to be a problem with the pixel plus tube models as the old cheaper philip's models seem to be ok and so did the LCD versions and it's is my guess that it is a design problem.
there is also one more stupid thing and that is you can't have the volume onscreen display enabled without having to have the channel number perimatly displayed in the top lefthand corner, stupid or what, who on earth wan't the channel number on all the time.

So has anyone else had the same problem with philips and pixel plus.

I have also made the same mistake.
I unpacked my Philips 32PW9509 yesterday, full of excitement waiting to see the pictures on my new television.
When I switched on, boy was I disappointed everything looks the same as you describe with your set, I have tried the soft mode which is better but still does not look outstanding.
I also can’t see any difference in Pixel Plus 2
I had a 29" Sony analogue set before and the picture was far superior to this new model.
It’s not the aerial as I installed a new digital one a few weeks ago and the picture on my Sony was excellent.
I chose this model after looking at the reviews in What Hi Fi Sound and Vision after quotes such as “An awesome reminder of just how good CRT technology is, the picture crushes LCD and Plasma screens"
As it is I can’t believe this set won What Hi Fi's CRT product of the year award.
Does it take a few days for the set to settle in? Or is there something I have missed.
I'm sorry but I thought digital was the way forward, but as far as I can see the older sets give a better picture.
Can anyone viewing this forum give us any help in setting up this Television properly?
Thanks

Whats the picture like from a DVD source, if its the same id send the telly back , if its good id try altering the different picture enhancements the Phillips has. I read a thread on here a while ago about someone with the same problem as you two, he got his working well in the end. Try the search function , see if you can find the thread.

As far as PixelPlus-modes go do remember to lower the sharpness value to minimum or just the next level or the pic goes to oversharp immediately. With other modes you can use the higher sharpness values but with PP keep the values low. Also don't forget to make sure that you have "color enhancement" on.

I have an easrlier version of PP. The 32" 9528. Its the PP v1.5 (with movie plus mode) and I think the picture is excellent in this mode. People do comment that the picture is more detailed. It does take a while to set it up to suit your own preferences. Also if you have moved from 50Hz to 100Hz I found this does take a while to get used to.
When setting up, your source is particularly important. Use a good quality DVD source. You should definately see a difference in picture quality with PP switched on and a good DVD source, and and then try changing settings to suit your own taste.
People can give you their settings including my own, but they are down to individual choice. I also tweaked settings constantly for around a month as I got used to the set. I haven't touched them on over a year now. If you are using a digital source such as SKY remember just because its digital it doesn't meant great quality. Different channels use different bit rates and this greatly affects quality. PP and 100Hz can struggle with poor source material. Some SKY channels are awful. I find The movie channels are best as well as SKY 1 and BBC1. However once you have your set up right and gotten used to the picture, I believe you will appreciate the difference even on the poorer quality channels. If you definately can't see extra detail and better quality of picture with PP then it may be a fault as I would recommend the system. It's not perfect and I do acknowledge its flaws such as occasional Halo effect but in general I do find it improves the picture and mine is always switched on.
Another thing to try is the double lines mode, this increases detail but utilises only 50Hz and some other digital features are also switched off, but if you are used to 100Hz you may find the flicker noticeable. It will show up the extra detail you should be getting with PP. Hope it works out for you.
Also depending where you bought, some retailers will offer an exchnge if you are not satisfied with the set even if it isn't faulty. Hope it works out for you, but I acknowledge that some people on the forums just don't like the picture on a PP set, again personal taste comes into play.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
I have to make an apology, for complaining about the poor picture quality.

After adjusting the Television with your suggestions, I can say I am really pleased with the picture quality.
DVD and Sky are first class in picture quality on most channels, and even some of the Terrestial channels give a excellent clean sharp picture.
I think a better instruction book would have make setting up a lot easier.
Never mind I'm all set up now and I am one happy chap.
